Players of the Month, May 2012: Mickey Pena & Jackie Bradley
SoxProspects.com Pitcher of the Month Mickey Pena highlighted a strong month in which he went 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA by pitching the opening six frames of Greenville's first-ever no hitter, the first in the Red Sox system since 2006, May 8 against Rome (ATL), striking out seven, walking none and earning the win. In six May starts Pena allowed seven earned runs on 28 hits (.226 opponents' average), striking out 40 opposing batters while walking only 5. He was voted SoxProspects.com Pitcher of the Week for that period (May 7-13). On the season Pena owns a 4-2 record with a 2.06 ERA in ten appearances (nine starts) over 52.1 innings pitched, having allowed 12 earned runs on 45 hits, striking out 57, walking 8 and holding opposing batters to a .232 average. He is currently the fortieth ranked prospect in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
Player of the Month Jackie Bradley continued his season-long assault on Carolina League pitching in May, hitting .382/.513/.629 (34-for-89) with three home runs, 11 doubles and a triple, scoring 20 runs and batting in 11 over 26 games. Bradley also took an impressive 21 bases on balls versus 16 strike outs. He also stole four bases but in the sole statistical blemish on the month was caught stealing five times. So far in 2012, Bradley is batting .376/.496/.573 (67-for-178) with three home runs, 22 doubles and two triples, drawn 41 walks and struck out 30 times, and has stolen 16 bases (6 CS). He is currently the seventh ranked prospect in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
