Sox purchase Podsednik's contract, activate Youkilis
Scott Podsednik (Kelly O'Connor) |
The Red Sox have made several roster moves before tonight's game in Baltimore. As reported in multiple outlets, Cody Ross will be placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a bone broken in his left foot that is expected to have him on the shelf for at least a few weeks. Ryan Sweeney was also placed on the 7-day disabled list after sustaining a concussion diving for a ball on Friday in Philadelphia.
Kevin Youkilis has been activated from the 15-day disabled list, and, is starting tonight's game at first base. Also, as reported first by Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports, the Red Sox purchased the contract of Scott Podsednik from Pawtucket. Daisuke Matsuzaka was placed on the 60-day DL to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Podsednik, 36, was acquired on May 11 from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash. He has appeared in 9 games for Pawtucket, going 10 for 31 with a triple, home run, and a pair of stolen bases. Podsednik has 10 years of major league experience, playing in over 1000 games and winning a World Series ring with the 2005 Chicago White Sox. He has generally been a left fielder in his career, but has also seen significant playing time in center.
When Podsednik appears in a game defensively, he will become the 12th person to man the Red Sox injury-ravaged outfield in 2012.
