Chris Carpenter to have elbow surgery

Chris Carpenter tweeted that he will have surgery on Thursday, March 29 to remove a bone spur in his elbow. The surgery will be performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. It is unknown how long Carpenter will be out.

The Red Sox received Carpenter, a right-handed pitcher, in the offseason as part of the compensation for former General Manager Theo Epstein's departure.

Per NESN's Didier Morais, Carpenter will not throw for 6-8 weeks.
