Scottsdale brushed aside amidst late Salt River rally

10/13 Cup of Coffee: A late inning charge opened up a close game, handing the Scorpions their second straight loss.

A late inning charge by the Rafters allowed Salt River to push aside the Scottsdale Scorpions, 10-5.

After Salt River plated two runs in the first, the Scorpions took the lead with three in the second on a Cody Overbeck (PHI) RBI triple, and RBI singles by Jean Segura (LAA) and Gary Brown (SF). The Rafters quickly responded by reclaiming the lead 4-3 in the top of the third, but Scottsdale tied the game on a Ryan Dent sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the sixth, Tyson Gillies’ (PHI) RBI single vaulted the Scorpions into the lead, 5-4. Unfortunately for the Scorpions, their bullpen was unable to hold the lead, allowing the Rafters to tie the game in the seventh and plate three in the eighth and two in the ninth for the decisive 10-5 victory.

Will Middlebrooks was 0 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base as the Scorpions starting third baseman. Dent batted ninth and played second base, going 1 for 3 with an RBI. On the mound, Caleb Clay tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing 1 hit and striking out 1. Jeremy Kehrt retired the only batter he faced in relief.
