Red Sox sign 41st round selection Matt Marquis

The Red Sox have officially signed their 41st round selection in the 2011 amateur draft, outfielder Matt Marquis.

Marquis, orginally drafted by the Red Sox in the 28th round of the 2008 amateur draft, is a right-handed outfielder with solid speed and power potential. Highly regarded out of high school in 2008, Marquis opted to attend Vanderbilt University where he appeared in just 16 games and collected just 2 hits as a freshman in 2009. Transferring to Maryland for his sophomore year in 2010, Marquis hit .255 with 5 home runs, 11 doubles and 27 RBI in 52 games for the Terrapins. In 2011, Marquis had a disappointing junior season, collecting just 6 hits in 29 at-bats.

Marquis has been assigned to the Rookie-Gulf Coast League Red Sox, where he made his professional debut this afternoon by going 0 for 1 with a walk.
