Players of the Week, Aug. 8-14: Matt Fox & Alex Hassan
Pawtucket's Matt Fox and Portland's Alex Hassan bested both their competitors both on the field and their peers in the polls last week, being voted SoxProspects.com Pitcher and Player of the Week of August 8-14.
Fox, a 28-year-old right-hander, made two starts last week the first at Charlotte (White Sox) August 8, allowing one run on two hits over six innings, walking one and striking out eight, and the second st Gwinnett (Braves) August 14, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out seven in a complete game shutout, earning wins in both outings. He also was named International League Pitcher of the Week for the same period. On the season Fox owns an 8-4 record and a 4.21 ERA in 119.2 innings over 26 games (19 starts), allowing 56 earned runs on 102 hits, striking out 113 and walking 44, and holding opposing batters to a .236 average.
Alex Hassan battered the Eastern League's Western Division last week to the tune of .455/.556/1.000 with two home runs, four doubles and a triple, scoring and batting in seven runs, respectively, and taking five bases on balls. In what was a week of strong performances for him, Hassan stood out August 9 against Akron (Indians), going three-for-three with two homers and batting in and scoring four runs each. Hassan is hitting .295/.414/.460 with 10 home runs, 32 doubles and a triple in 387 at-bats (114 hits) over 108 games in 2011. He is currently the eighteenth ranked prospect in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
