June Players of the Month: Miles Head & Kyle Weiland

Salem first baseman Miles Head and Pawtucket starting pitcher Kyle Weiland continued their breakout 2011 campaigns in June earning themselves SoxProspects.com Player and Pitcher of the Month honors.

Head posted a .361/.438/.629 line with 4 home runs, 12 doubles, and a triple in 97 at bats, scoring 20 runs and driving in 22. He received a June 29 promotion to High-A Salem after spending 22 of 25 games in the month with Greenville. He was also named South Atlantic League Player of the Week of May 30-June 5. On the season Head is hitting .343/.411/.608 with 15 home runs, 28 doubles, 1 triple, 5 stolen bases on 8 attempts, and was named a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All Star.

In 34.1 innings pitched over six starts in June, Weiland allowed 9 earned runs on 21 hits for a 2.36 ERA and held opposing batters to a .172 average (.516 OPSA), while striking out 36 and walking only 14, with a 3-2 win-loss record. Weiland saved the best for last in what was an otherwise consistently good but unspectacular month, holding Rochester (Twins) to a single hit and an unearned run over eight innings of work and striking out 12 while walking none and earning the win at home June 29. He is 7-6 with a 3.02 ERA in 2011, allowing 32 runs, 29 earned, on 63 hits for a .203 average with 93 strikeouts and 37 bases-on-balls in 86.1 innings of work over 16 starts.

Weiland is currently the eighth ranked and Head the nineteenth ranked prospects in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
