Red Sox select Travis Shaw in the 9th round

With the 292nd overall pick in the draft, the Red Sox have selected Travis Shaw, a third baseman from Kent State.

Shaw, 21, was previously drafted by Boston in the 32nd round of the 2008 draft. The son of former major league pitcher Jeff Shaw, Travis is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and has impressed scouts with is bat. In 2010, he hit .330 with 22 doubles, 15 home runs and 60 RBI. He also has a keen eye at the plate, leading his team and conference in walks during the 2010 season.

A participant in the Cape Cod League last summer for the Bourne Braves, Shaw helped lead the team to the Western Division title by earning Player of the Week honors for the week ending June 28th. With his batting prowess and size, Shaw projects to stick at third base as a professional.
