Red Sox select Jordan Weems in 3rd round


With the 111th overall pick in the draft, the Red Sox selected catcher Jordan Weems from Columbus High School in Columbus, Ga.

A 6-foot-3, 185 lb. backstop who is committed to Georgia State, Weems helped the Blue Devils to a second straight state championship with a .443 batting average, six home runs and 26 RBI in 39 games. As a junior, the left-handed hitting Weems helped Columbus to its first state champtionship since 2005 with a .403 average, 6 doubles, and 12 RBI. He hit .357 as a sophomore.

He also comes from a strong baseball background. His father, Rick, was an All-America catcher and was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1985 draft and his older brother Chase was taken by the New York Yankees in 2007 and currently plays in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He has indicated in interviews that if the price is right, he will forgo his commitment and sign this summer.
