Players of the Week, May 23-29: Ryan Lavarnway & Alex Wilson


A tough week for the Sea Dogs in the win column did not reflect the performance of this week's SoxProspects.com Player and Pitcher of the Week. Sea Dog teammates Ryan Lavarnway and Alex Wilson took home honors this week, putting up impressive numbers despite Portland's 2-6 record.

Lavarnway, 23, easily outpaced all other comeptition for Player of the Week honors. In the 6 games he appeared in, Lavarway hit .400/.500/.900 with 3 home runs, 5 RBI and 7 runs scored. On the season, Lavarnway is currently hitting .281/.358/.500 with 12 home runs and 32 RBI. He is currently second in the Eastern League in home runs and fourth in RBI.

Wilson, 24, also easily beat the competition in this week's community poll, garnering two thirds of all votes. The right-hander's lone start of the week came on the 25th against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (TOR). Wilson went 6.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6 in a no decision. After a shaky start to his Double-A career in 2010, Wilson has been stellar in 2011, compiling a 2.92 ERA to go along with a 3:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 52.1 innings pitched. He currently leads the Sea Dogs in strikeouts and innings pitched.
