Players of the Week, June 6-12; Stephen Fife and Brandon Jacobs
With what could be arguably be considered the best outing of any organization starting pitcher this season, Portland's Stephen Fife is honored with as this week's SoxProspects.com Pitcher of the Week. Meanwhile, at the plate, Greenville's Brandon Jacobs takes home Player of the Week honors.
On Tuesday, the right hander took a no-hitter into the seventh inning against the Richmond Flying Squirrels (SF). He had allowed three baserunners on a walk and two errors before a one-out single broke up the no-no. Fife, a 3rd round pick in 2008, finished his outing with 6.1 innings pitched and just the one hit while also fanning seven batters. His record now sits at 6-3 with an ERA of 2.94 and a WHIP of 1.17. The 24 year old was also named Eastern League Player of the Week thanks to his stellar performance.
Jacobs collected 9 hits and 6 RBI this week, both of which tied for the lead amongst Red Sox minor leaguers. The 20 year old posted a line of .375/.423/.667 and his OPS of 1.090 was tops in the system, excluding the Dominican Summer League. Though he went just 1 for 5 on Thursday, the 2009 10th-round pick provided the big blow against the Rome Braves, with a 3-run homer in the seventh on the way to an eventual 5-4 Drive victory. Jacobs has performed well all season, hitting at a .341/386/.683 clip.
