Portice pitches Peoria to victory


11/2 Cup of Coffee: Eammon Portice made his first start of the Fall season, earning the win in a 7-4 game.

Scottsdale struck first with a run in the top half of the opening frame against starter Portice, but Peoria answered right back with a run on a solo shot by Dustin Ackley (SEA) in the bottom of the inning. After Portice held the Scorpions at bay in the second, the Javelinas increased their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning on RBI doubles by Michael McDade (TOR) and Koby Clemens (HOU), and an RBI single by Ackely. Juan Carlos Linares scored a run in the inning after reaching on a hit by pitch. Scottsdale got 2 runs back in the fourth on a double by Derek Norris (WAS), but Peoria responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Jason Rice came on in the fifth inning and promptly gave up another run on two singles and a ground out, but allowed only that run through 2.0 innings of work. Peoria padded on an insurance run with a solo shot by Brandon Barnes (HOU) in the eighth.

Portice earned the win in the game, going 3.0 innings while only allowing 2 hits, an earned run, and striking out 3. Rice went 2.0 innings giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits and a strikeout, earning his 4th hold of the Fall season. Linares finished his day 2 for 3, raising his season average to .417, in addition to scoring a run and stealing a base. Ryan Lavarnway was 0 for 3, but scored a run while walking twice in the game. He also committed his 3rd error of the season behind the plate, but threw out the only runner who attempted a steal for Scottsdale on the day.

The Javelinas return to action Tuesday against the Scottsdale Scorpions at 9:35 EST.

Player of the Night: Eammon Portice, who improved his record to 2-1 by going 3.0 innings while only allowing 2 hits, an earned run, and striking out 3.
