In championship preview, Javelinas nip Scorpions

11/19 Cup of Coffee: In a preview of Saturday's Arizona Fall League championship, the Peoria Javelinas showed they can win with solid pitching.

In a seven inning contest, the Javelinas nipped the Eastern Division champion Scottsdale Scorpions 1-0.

In a game that only saw seven total hits, the Javelinas posted the only run of the contest in the bottom of the third inning. Nate Tenbrink (SEA) started off the inning with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a fly out by Brandon Barnes (HOU). A costly fielding error by Scorpions second baseman Steve Lombardozzi (WSH) allowed Tenbrink to score the decisive run. Scottsdale had multiple chances, including a runner on second and third with no outs in the third, but failed to capitalize by going 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Peoria pitchers allowed just three hits, but yielded five walks during the shutout.

Ryan Lavarnway was 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts as the Javelinas catcher. Shortstop Jose Iglesias was 1 for 3 on the afternoon. Seth Garrison had a shaky fifth inning, allowing a hit and two walks but ended up unscathed. Daniel Turpen picked up his first save of the fall, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Javelinas will host the Scorpions today at 2:35 EST in the last regular season game of the fall.
