Players of the Week, August 23-29; Ryan Lavarnway and Pete Ruiz

The final week in August provided some of the most impressive performances of the entire 2010 season, culminating in Ryan Lavarnway and Pete Ruiz being named SoxProspects.com Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Lavarnway compiled one of the strongest one week slash lines for any Red Sox minor leaguer in recent memory last week, with a .421/.621/1.211 output. His OPS of 1.831 is the highest one-week OPS for any player in the system since 2008. The 23-year-old also smacked 3 doubles and 4 home runs while driving in 9 for the Sea Dogs. Lavarnway continues an outstanding season at the plate that has seen him earn this award for a third time, in addition to garnering SoxProspects.com Player of the Month honors in both April and June.

On the mound, Ruiz had a two-start week which saw him earn the victory in both. He took the mound against Charleston on Monday, throwing 5.0 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits in Greenville's 6-5 win. He followed that performance up with a 5.0 inning, 5 hit, 1 run outing against Asheville. Ruiz is now 10-8 with a 4.19 ERA in 26 appearances for the Drive.

It was a banner week for hitters in the Red Sox organization last week, with Lavarnway, Josh Reddick, and Reynaldo Rodriguez all winning Player of the Week honors in their respective leagues. Reddick's week was particularly of note, with his 17 hits matching the organization's highest one-week total since 2008. Mike Lee also won Player of the Week in the Carolina League for his 6 innings of one-hit ball against Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
