Players of the Week, May 3-9: Nate Spears and Kyle Weiland
A pair of Portland Sea Dogs nabbed the honors this week, with SoxProspects.com community members choosing Nate Spears as the Player of the Week and Kyle Weiland being chosen as Pitcher of the Week.
Spears, 25, had an impressive week for Portland, going 10 for 22 with 4 walks. His line of .455/.586/.636 to lead all minor leaguers in the organization with at least 20 plate appearances. He also added a home run and 3 RBI. Spears, who spent the last four seasons in the Cubs organization after being taken in the fifth round of the 2003 Draft by Baltimore, is batting .277 with 3 home runs and 11 RBI and an OPS of .846 on the season.
The 23-year-old Weiland was outstanding in his two starts last week, coming off the disabled list Monday to throw 4.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball before going 5.0 innings without allowing a hit on Sunday against New Britain. In 9.0 total innings, he struck out 4 and walked just 2. Weiland, the Red Sox' third round pick in 2008, was 7-9 with a 3.46 ERA last season in his first full season of professional baseball with High-A Salem.
