Sox claim Casey Fien from Detroit

According to the Detroit Tigers' official twitter account, the Red Sox have acquired right-hander Casey Fien off waivers.

The 26-year-old Fien was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed Johnny Damon. He was originally drafted by the Tigers in the 20th round of the MLB Draft in 2006. Fien has worked exclusively out of the bullpen in his four seasons in the Detroit system, posting a 3.41 ERA in 58 innings while striking out over a batter an inning last season as the closer for Triple-A Toledo.

Fien made his major league debut last season pitching in nine games with Detroit, posting a 7.94 ERA in 11.1 innings. In four minor league seasons, Fien has compiled a 14-6 record with a 3.04 ERA in 222.1 innings pitched, racking up 34 saves while striking out 239. He is expected to compete for a spot in the Boston bullpen.

UPDATE (2:30 pm): To make room for Fien on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated right-hander Gaby Hernandez for assignment, according to Twitter posts by MLB.com's Ian Browne and CSNNE's Joe Haggerty. Hernandez was claimed off waivers from Seattle on February 10.
