Sox claim Gaby Hernandez off waivers

The Red Sox today claimed 23 year-old right-hander Gaby Hernandez off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. Robert Manuel, who was claimed off waivers back in November, was designated for assignment to make room for Hernandez.

Hernandez, originally drafted in the third round of the 2004 amateur draft by the New York Mets, spent all of last season with Triple-A Tacoma of the Seattle organization, going 10-9 in 26 starts with a 5.23 ERA. In six minor league seasons, Hernandez is 46-44 with a 4.27 ERA in 136 appearances between the Mets, Marlins and Mariners organizations.

Hernandez was ranked as the Mets' third best prospect in 2005 and 2006 by Baseball America. He was traded to the Marlins in December of 2005 for Paul LoDuca, and was ranked as Florida's no. 3 prospect in 2007 and no. 5 prospect in 2008. He landed with the Mariners after a trade deadline deal in 2008 in exchange for Arthur Rhodes.
