Lowell disabled, Pauley called up

The Red Sox have placed 3B Mike Lowell on the disabled list (oblique) and have called up RHP David Pauley from Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Lowell injured himself while at bat in the seventh inning of last night's game against Texas and was replaced in the field in the eighth. Pauley last pitched Saturday at the third annual Futures at Fenway against Charlotte (White Sox) allowing two earned runs on four hits, striking out four while walking two and earning the win. Manager Terry Francona said that Pauley's call up is intended to fortify the bull pen which was stretched out in last night's high scoring affair, and that his stay with the big club would likely be brief. He is 13-4 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 starts with Pawtucket, allowing 50 earned runs on 132 hits over 135.2 innings of work, striking out 94 while walking 40 and holding opposing batters to a .258 BAA. He is currently the 30th ranked prospect in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
