According to
ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Boston Red Sox will attempt to avoid the recently signed contract of Cuban defector
Michel Abreu. The power hitting first baseman signed a $425K contract in late August, and the organization had hoped he would compete for a big league roster spot in spring training. However, Abreu represented his age as 26, and Boston later discovered that Abreu was actually 30 years old. Such a misrepresentation is valid grounds for voiding the contract. Additionally, Abreu has been unable to establish residnecy in the United States.
