Red Sox to void Abreu contract

According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Boston Red Sox will attempt to avoid the recently signed contract of Cuban defector Michel Abreu. The power hitting first baseman signed a $425K contract in late August, and the organization had hoped he would compete for a big league roster spot in spring training. However, Abreu represented his age as 26, and Boston later discovered that Abreu was actually 30 years old. Such a misrepresentation is valid grounds for voiding the contract. Additionally, Abreu has been unable to establish residnecy in the United States.
