Cup of Coffee: DSL falls in Game 2; Salem blows big lead

8/31 Cup of Coffee:
It was a tough Friday for the affiliates, as just Portland was able to come out with the win. Worcester got plenty of free bases, working seven walks and forcing two errors, but just five singles meant only five runs, wasting Hunter Dobbins' strong start in which he struck out seven. The final 19 Drive hitters went down in order and only Miguel Ugueto's single kept them from suffering a perfect game, while Greenville committed three errors along the way in a blowout loss. In the final game to finish on the night, Salem carried a no-hitter into the sixth, four of which were thrown by Juan Valera, but a 6-0 lead evaporated by the end of the seventh and Delmarva walked it off in 11. The DSL Red Sox lost their first game of the postseason, forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 on Saturday. However, Portland pounded out 11 hits and both Elih Marrero (pictured) and Tyler McDonough each had a trio of knocks along the way. Marrero, along with teammate Mikey Romero and Brooks Brannon and Andy Lugo from Salem, drilled homers.

-----

Worcester couldn't take advantage of two Toledo errors or seven walks, scoring just one run on the evening. Bobby Dalbec and Vaughn Grissom made up the multi-hit club, with Chase Meidroth the only other batter to get into the hit column. Hunter Dobbins held up his end of the bargain, going five strong innings. He had plenty of traffic, with six hits and four free passes, but he surrendered just two runs, striking out seven along the way. Liam Hendriks also worked around a hit in his rehab assignment. He, along with Luis Guerrero, Wyatt Olds, and Chase Shugart, each had a shutout inning. Guerrero struck out the side in order.

After that, they discussed the very deep pitching staff, specifically what Ian saw with Hayden Mullins, Yodanny Monegro, Elmer Rodriguez, Blake Wehunt. Next, Ian talked about what he saw offensively from Mikey Romero and the recent draftees, Zach Erhard, Will Turner and Hudson White. Finally, they wrapped up with a brief discussion of Justin Riemer and a few more names who stood out.

Cup of Coffee: Gonzalez sharp as Sea Dogs hold division lead; DSL Red nears title

8/30 Cup of Coffee:
It was a day of strong pitching performances across the system. Portland and Salem both delivered combined shutouts featuring Wikelman Gonzalez (pictured) and Matt Duffy, respectively. Worcester fell despite a strong outing by Jason Alexander, while Greenville dropped its third straight. Down in the Dominican, the DSL Red Sox Red are rolling through the playoffs and are now standing just one win away from the league championship.

-----

Worcester managed only five hits as Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Kyle Teel each got the night off. Jason Alexander did his part, allowing one run on three hits in five innings, striking out six against one strikeout. Cam Booser was sharp as he started his rehab assignment, allowing a quick leadoff single before striking out the next three batters. He threw 16 pitches in his inning of work, 13 for strikes. The loss went to Zach Penrod, who came on for the eighth and walked two of the four batters he faced. Both of those baserunners came on to score on a home run off of Yohan Ramirez. All of the five Worcester hits were singles, including one by Chase Meidroth, who maintains a commanding lead in the International League on-base percentage race with a .451 mark.

8/29 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday. Worcester won its third straight behind multi-hit efforts from Vaughn Grissom and Enmanuel Valdez and five scoreless innings from the bullpen. Mikey Romero clubbed his first Double-A homer as Portland dropped its fourth straight. Blake Wehunt struck out seven as Greenville was shut out in Bowling Green. Cup of Coffee: Anthony, Teel, Campbell lead Worcester to big win

8/28 Cup of Coffee
: Worcester dominated at the plate with 12 runs, led by Roman Anthony (pictured), Kristian Campbell, Chase Meidroth, and Kyle Teel. Richard Fitts also pitched well in Worcester's win. The Sea Dogs lost, but Mikey Romero made his debut with Portland and picked up his first hit. Eduardo Rivera had a huge night on the bump for Salem despite their loss. Miguel Bleis also went yard for Greenville.

-----

It was an incredible offensive night for Worcester, and it started with the number one prospect. Roman Anthony continued his hot stretch with another four-hit game, his second such game in his past seven contests. The center fielder fell a home run shy of the cycle, roping two singles, a double, and a triple in addition to drawing a walk. Per Ian Cundall on Twitter, Anthony's lone out of the night was a 107-MPH lineout to shortstop. Kristian Campbell's power showed up yet again, belting a three-run homer in the third inning. Kyle Teel had a big night as well, going 1 for 2 with a double, two walks, and three RBI. He also threw out a would-be base stealer at second base. Chase Meidroth reached base five times with two singles and three walks, while Enmanuel Valdez and Eddy Alvarez each hit home runs.

Richard Fitts picked up his eighth win of the year, tossing six innings of two-run ball. He allowed five hits, punched out six, and did not issue a walk. Chase Shugart, Alex Speas, and Yohan Ramirez all threw a shutout frame to end it, with Speas punching out a pair and Ramirez striking out three.

Minor Notes: Mayer likely out for season; Anthony has huge week

The biggest news of the week involves Boston's second-ranked prospect. There was also another promotion, as the WooSox added another player who was great this season for Portland.

-----

Mayer likely done for the season
Per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, recently promoted shortstop Marcelo Mayer is likely done for the season with a lumbar strain in his lower back. This will be the second consecutive season where Mayer won't play a game in September, as he missed two months of action last season with a shoulder injury. The second-ranked prospect in the system will have to wait until 2025 to make his WooSox debut. The promotion was well-earned, as he hit .307/.370/.480 with 28 doubles, eight home runs, and 13 stolen bases in 77 games with the Sea Dogs in 2024.

Cup of Coffee: Jorge Rodriguez helps propel Red Sox Red to DSL finals

6/27 Cup of Coffee: The incredible 2024 season for the Red Sox Red squad continued as they swept their way through the Dominican Summer League Semifinals.

-----

Game 2, DSL Semifinals
Team Red continues to roll towards a championship, as they have now outscored opponents 44-15 in four playoff contests. Following Sunday's walk-off comeback, the Red squad left no doubt on Monday, racing out to an early 5-0 lead and cruising from there. Jorge Rodriguez reached base four times, going 3 for 4 with a walk, RBI, and two runs scored. Alexander Mambel doubled and scored twice as part of a 2-for-4 effort. Anderson Fermin and Avinson Pinto continued to give opposing staffs fits at the top of the lineup. Fermin singled, walked twice, and stole a base on his way to a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff slot. Pinto was 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI.

Yodrian Beltre scattered four hits across four innings, surrendering one unearned run while striking out one. He did not issue a walk. Dariel Morillo pitched around some shaky control, walking four and striking out three in 1 2/3 but emerging without allowing a run. He got some help from Greider Colina, who emerged to escape a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning. Colina went 2 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing two hits. Yander Bonaci struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth to seal the win.

Top-seeded DSL Giants Black evened their series with the DSL Angels with a 12-3 victory yesterday. The teams will play a decisive third game Tuesday, with the winner meeting in the best-of-three Dominican Summer League Championship Series against the Red Sox Red starting on Thursday.

Player of the Day: Jorge Rodriguez scuffled through a 1-for-20 slump to end the regular season, but he's warmed up at the right time. With Monday's effort, he is now 8 for 17 in the postseason, with three hits apiece in both of the clinching games. The 18-year-old was signed to a modest $10,000 bonus as an international free agent out of Venezuela in January and posted a .333 on-base percentage during the season.

Cup of Coffee: Grissom, Sogard power WooSox; Ingrassia returns for Salem

8/26 Cup of Coffee:
Boston's affiliates went 3-2 on an action-packed Sunday. Behind strong offensive performances from Vaughn Grissom and Nick Sogard (pictured), Worcester blew out Norfolk. Connelly Early matched a season-high with nine strikeouts in Portland's loss to Somerset. Elmer Rodriguez was solid while leading Greenville to its fourth straight win while Jojo Ingrassia returned to the mound for Salem. In the Dominican Republic, DSL Red Sox Red took Game 1 of the DSL Semifinals in walk-off fashion.

Cup of Coffee: Rosario, Rogers lead Greenville; Anthony goes deep again

8/25 Cup of Coffee: After two straight days of sweeps, only one affiliate emerged victorious on Saturday. Greenville won its third straight and seventh in nine games, led by the bat of Ronald Rosario (pictured) and the arm of Dalton Rogers. Roman Anthony led off Worcester's loss with another homer, while Juan Valera returned to his scoreless ways in a Salem pitchers' duel. Portland also fell despite solid efforts from Max Ferguson and Phillip Sikes.

-----

Things got off to an auspicious start on Saturday as Roman Anthony led off the contest with a home run over the right field wall. However, a three-run Norfolk rally in the eighth snapped Worcester's seven-game winning streak. It was the second straight day going deep for Anthony, who is 10 for 22 with 7 RBI in the Norfolk series. Kristian Campbell had a single to extend his hitting streak across two levels to 10 games. He is 8 for 19 since his promotion from Portland. Jason Alexander allowed three runs on six hits in five innings, while Wyatt Olds surrendered three in three innings of relief to take the loss.

Cup of Coffee: Meidroth double short of cycle; Gonzalez 5 no-hit innings; DSL Red moves on in postseason

8/24 Cup of Coffee:
It was an eventful day in the system, as the DSL Red Sox Red moved on to the Dominican Summer Leauge semifinals, while Worcester blew a lead but was able to win in extras on the back of an exceptional performance from the trio of Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Chase Meidroth (pictured). Salem was in a similar predicament, but Nazzan Zanetello delivered a victory for his squad. Wikelman Gonzalez had a bright spot in what's been a tough year, throwing five no-hit innings as Portland one-hit Somerset, while Greenville blanked Rome.

-----

Worcester had Norfolk down to its final hitter in the ninth, but old friend (ish) Jud Fabian doubled to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to extra innings. However, the Red Sox exploded for four in the 10th, punctuated by a deep home run by Roman Anthony and the Tides went quietly in the bottom half. He had one of four Worcester home runs, as Kristian Campbell knocked his first two Triple-A homers and Chase Meidroth, who was a double short of the cycle, opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first. The top of the lineup was key, as that trio had nine hits and seven RBI.

Rich Hill made his system debut (again) and had two no-hit innings with a walk and two strikeouts. He was followed by Brad Keller, who also didn't allow a run, contributing two innings of work, while Chase Shugart delivered a clean sixth and seventh.

Cup of Coffee: Coffey fans 11 in Portland win as affiliates sweep

8/23 Cup of Coffee:
It was a successful night down on the farm, as all five affiliates still in action completed the organization-wide sweep. Isaac Coffey (pictured) was dominant as Portland pitching struck out 16 on its way to victory. The DSL Red Sox Red squad opened up their playoff run with a big win, Salem emerged with a walk-off victory in a sloppy contest. Andy Lugo led the way for Greenville, and Worcester powered its way over Norfolk.

-----

A pair of solo home runs helped power the WooSox in a come-from-behind win. Bobby Dalbec went deep in the fourth as part of his three-hit afternoon, while Eddy Alvarez snapped a 3-3 tie in the sixth with his blast. Jamie Westbrook was 2 for 3 with a walk an a run scored and Chase Meidroth picked up his first triple of the season. Quinn Priester was taken deep on his first pitch of the day by unsigned 2021 second-round pick Jud Fabian. He settled in, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five against two walks. Brian Van Belle scattered four hits over 3 1/3 shutout innings of relief to earn the win before giving way to Yohan Ramirez, who fired a scoreless ninth for the save.

-----

Excellent pitching and timely hitting ruled the day as the Sea Dogs continued their playoff push. Isaac Coffey fanned 11 batters without issuing a walk over five scoreless innings, giving up one unearned run on three hits. Brendan Cellucci went the final 3 2/3 scoreless for the win, giving up just one hit while striking out five against two walks. In between, Liam Hendriks continued his rehab assignment, facing three batters. He surrendered an infield hit, induced a line drive out to left field, and issued a walk. Jhostynxon Garcia keyed the victory with a two-run seventh-inning homer. The blast followed a double off the bat of Allan Castro, his first extra-base hit in nine games since his promotion to Double-A. Castro also walked and hit a sacrifice fly on the night.

The win opens Portland's lead over Somerset in the second-half standings to 4 1/2 games with 22 remaining on the schedule.

----

After falling into a 4-0 hole, Greenville responded with six unanswered runs. Andy Lugo had a pair of doubles, a walk, RBI, and run scored to lead the way. Bryan Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with a walk, scoring a pair of runs, while Miguel Bleis added a single and worked a free pass. Starter Blake Wehunt went the first four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits across four innings, striking out four and walking two. Cooper Adams was sharp out of the bullpen, giving up two hits in 3 2/3 scoreless innings to get credit for the win.

-----

Salem got the walk-off win despite some very shaky defense, committing five errors that led to all four runs being unearned. Natanael Yuten committed two of those miscues but made up for it at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a triple, walk, RBI, and two runs scored. Brooks Brannon doubled and drove in a pair as part of his two-hit evening. It was a Karim Ayubi single in the bottom of the ninth scoring Yuten that sent the Sox home victorious. Starter Luis Cohen allowed three runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings as he needed 81 pitches to pitch around a pair of those miscues. Denis Reguillo went 2 1/3 scoreless, striking out two and walking two, and Francis Hernandez managed to pitch around four walks and three errors in two innings, allowing just the one unearned score on one hit to get the win.

----

Game 1, Dominican Summer League Quarterfinals
A six-run seventh-inning rally blew open the playoff opener down in the Dominican. Jhoan Peguero led the way at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a walk, run scored, and two RBI. Justin Gonzales drove in three, including two on a bases-loaded single in the seventh. Avinson Pinto had a triple, RBI, and run scored, and Edwin Brito doubled as part of his two-hit effort. Dalvinson Reyes got the start, surrendering two runs on two hits in 2 2/3 innings. Those are the first runs Reyes has allowed as a professional after going 17 scoreless in five outings this season. Yermain Ruiz gave up three runs in 2 1/3 to get the win, and Juan Henriquez and Greider Colina combined for four scoreless to secure the first game of the series.

Game two of the best-of-three series will take place today (Friday) at 11:00.

-----

Player of the Day: After an uneven start to the season, Isaac Coffey has been outstanding since mid-June. Since June 16, Coffey has posted a 1.98 ERA, limiting opponents to a .216 batting average while striking out 71 in 50 innings. His 123 strikeouts on the year are most in the Red Sox system and tied for second in the Eastern League.

Not much went right for Portland while Jedixson Paez was effective out of the bullpen as Greenville was no-hit at home. In Salem, Nazzan Zanetello and Nelly Taylor both went deep.

Minor Notes: Worcester adds Campbell; Hill signs minor-league deal

Last week's top story was the system's three top prospects moving to Triple-A. This week, the fifth-ranked prospect is set to join them. After a power surge over the last two weeks, Kristian Campbell (pictured, right) will see if the International League poses more of a challenge.

-----

Campbell promoted to Worcester
Chase Ford of Milb Central reported on Sunday that Kristian Campbell got promoted to Triple-A. Campbell's Double-A tenure lasted only 10 weeks as he slashed .362/.463/.582 over 213 at-bats. The power came on over his last 10 games when he slugged .725 with four home runs and two triples. He joins a loaded Worcester roster that will include six of the system's top 15 prospects. With Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Vaughn Grissom, and Chase Meidroth seeing time up the middle defensively, it will be interesting to see how playing time shakes out among this talented group.

Cup of Coffee: Full-season affiliates go unbeaten with a pair of shutouts

8/16 Cup of Coffee: It was a great evening of baseball stateside, as both Worcester and Greenville recorded shutouts, while Portland and Salem each rode the momentum from fast offensive starts to victory. Blake Wehunt (pictured) had the best of some strong performances on the mound, with five no-hit innings and just one walk. Isaac Coffey struck out nine over five frames for Greenville and Quinn Priester permitted just three baserunners. There weren't many standout evenings in the batter's box, as Greenville and Worcester had three hits each, but with the pitching going the way it was, it wasn't a hindrance to a 4-0 night for the full-season affiliates. Despite that, Freili Encarnacion nearly beat Fredericksburg by himself, with three hits and five RBI. It was more of a mixed bag in the Dominican Republic, as Red had a dramatic, come-from-behind, walk-off win, while Blue got blown out.

-----

There were just six hits between the two squads, three on each side, but Worcester was able to bang out a three-run sixth to secure the win. Bobby Dalbec did most of the damage with a two-run double, breaking a scoreless tie. The Red Sox also worked eight walks, headlined by Chase Meidroth's three. The start went to Quinn Priester and he was outstanding, facing just one over the minimum in his five-inning stint. He scattered a pair of hits, didn't walk anyone and added a strikeout. Luis Guerrero also contributed a pair of clean innings in relief.

Cup of Coffee: Dean shines for Greenville; DSL Red squad clinches playoff berth

8/16 Cup of Coffee:
The DSL Red Sox Red earned the organization's first playoff spot of the 2024 season with its victory over the second-place DSL Reds. Their Blue counterparts got the victory in the completion of an earlier suspended game before falling the in the scheduled one. Back stateside, Noah Dean (pictured) and Jedixson Paez teamed up to lead Greenville in a pitcher's duel. Nathan Hickey helped power the streaking Sea Dogs, while Franklin Arias had a big night for Salem. Worcester fell at Polar Park despite a big effort by a rehabbing Triston Casas.

-----

Worcester could not generate much in the way of offense in this contest cut short in the seventh inning by rain. Triston Casas had two of the three WooSox hits, picking up his seventh double in game 11 of his rehab stint. Chase Meidroth had the only other Worcester hit, adding a walk and scoring a run. Justin Hagenman got the start, surrendering three runs on eight hits in four innings, getting saddled with the loss.

-----

Nathan Hickey led the way as the Sea Dogs won for the 17th time in 19 games. Hickey was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two walks, two RBI, and a run scored. Jhostynxon Garcia went 2 for 5 in his second straight multi-hit effort, while Allan Castro singled, walked, and stole a base. Tyler Miller was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles in the victory. Caleb Bolden turned in a solid spot start, scattering two hits over four scoreless innings, striking out five against two walks. Jacob Webb got the win, allowing three runs (two earned) in four innings of relief, while Christopher Troye threw a scoreless ninth for the save.

-----

The Drive offense mustered only four hits, but that was sufficient because of some excellent work by their trio of hurlers. Starter Noah Dean was dominant, giving up just one hit across four shutout innings. He struck out seven of the 16 batters he faced, walking one and hitting two with pitches. Jedixson Paez allowed one run on five hits in four innings, striking out four without granting a walk. Adam Smith went a scoreless inning to earn the save. Zach Ehrhard, Boston's fourth-round pick in July's draft, led the offense with two hits.

-----

Salem took advantage of some extra opportunities as the Nationals committed six errors in Thursday's contest, including two during a critical three-run rally in the sixth. Franklin Arias was 3 for 5 out of the leadoff slot and is now 8 for 18 in his last four games after snapping an ugly 3-for-42 skid. Natanael Yuten was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Nelly Taylor scored a pair of runs during his 1-for-4 performance. Eduardo Rivera got the call for the spot start and turned in a serviceable effort, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings. Michael Sansone was the winner in relief, throwing two hitless innings and walking a pair against two strikeouts.

-----

Team Red withstood a ninth-inning rally to punch their playoff ticket. Justin Gonzales blasted a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Sox a lead they would not relinquish. It was Gonzales' fifth round-tripper of the year and his first since shifting over from the DSL Blue team. Anderson Fermin and Avinson Pinto helped set the table at the top of the order with two hits apiece. Starter Madinson Frias went the first four innings, giving up one run on three hits. Yoandys Veraza cruised through four scoreless but allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth inning. Anthony Felix allowed both inherited runners to score, bringing the game within one, but prevented any additional damage.

The win clinched the DSL West Division over the second-place DSL Reds. The 39-14 Sox trail the DSL Giants by a half-game in the chase for the top overall seed, with three games remaining in the regular-season schedule.

-----

This one started with one out in the top of the 10th inning after lightning forced a suspension with a 5-5 tie after nine back on July 8. After six weeks of delay, Team Blue didn't need even a hit to emerge victorious. Automatic runner Yoiber Ruiz advanced to third on a ground out and raced home with the winning run on a wild pick. The key player for the Blue team's win has been out of the organization for three weeks. Moises Bolivar had a monster effort, going 3 for 3 with a triple, two walks, two RBI, and a run scored. He was traded just before the deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the deal that sent James Paxton to Boston. Gilbel Galvan took over on the mound upon the game's resumption and recorded two outs for the win.

Little went Team Blue's way in the regularly scheduled contest. Tavano Baker and Justim Sojo both picked up a double, while Vladimir Asencio snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a fifth-inning single. Starter Trent Wilson struggled with his control, walking four batters and allowing one hit as he surrendered two runs in 2/3 of an inning.

-----

Player of the Day: After allowing nine runs in 4 1/3 innings in his last two bullpen outings, Noah Dean found success back in the rotation for his first Greenville start. The 2022 fifth-round pick was nearly unhittable in his four innings. His ranks second in the organization with 107 strikeouts, and his 34.7 percent K rate places him third among pitchers with at least 50 innings on the year. Over his last 12 starts across two levels, Dean has struck out 75 batters in just 49 innings while allowing a meager .179 slugging percentage.

Cup of Coffee: Fitts cruises in Worcester win

8/9 Cup of Coffee:
Wins and rain were the results on Thursday, with both fitting into the Worcester box score. Richard Fitts (pictured) turned in a strong outing following a lengthy delay to lead the Worcester victory. First-place Portland picked up a half-game in its division, while the DSL squads swept their three contests.

-----

It was an exciting pitching matchup in Syracuse with Richard Fitts lined up against 2023 second-round pick Brandon Sproat in his Triple-A debut. After a 90-minute rain delay at the start, Fitts surrendered a two-run homer in the first but cruised thereafter, finishing with just the two runs allowed on five hits across six innings, striking out seven against one walk. It was the second straight quality start for Fitts after he scuffled through July. Greg Weissert, who accompanied Fitts to the organization in last winter's Alex Verdugo trade, struck out three in two scoreless innings, and Wyatt Olds gave up one run in the ninth.
