Fall/Winter League Roundup: Lugo homers, Sox sign minor league pitcher


Another week of winter ball is complete, as Matthew Lugo (pictured) and Henry Nunez put together some fine performances in the Roberto Clemente League. The Sox also signed a new arm to a minor league deal, and he has been pitching in the Venezuelan League.

Dominican Professional Baseball League 
Infielder Nick Sogard joined Toros Del Este this past week and made his debut. He played in five games and went 5 for 17 (.294) with five singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. He scored twice and knocked in two. He also played some shortstop and made a nice play in the hole. No other Sox players played in the Dominican League this past week.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League 
Shortstop Matthew Lugo had a nice week, going 4 for 14 with a home run, his fifth of the winter, and two runs scored. He has a .742 OPS this winter. Christian Koss also got a couple starts and went 1 for 4 in both games. He doubled, walked, scored a run, and drove in a run. Juan Montero had a good week as well, making the most of his two games. He went 2 for 6 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. 
On the mound, Nate Tellier got in just one game and faced one batter, retiring him. Henry Nunez also got in one game and was very good over four innings of work. He allowed just two hits, one run, and struck out three. He now has a 2.55 ERA in 17 2/3 innings this winter. Jeter Downs' winter season is over after hitting .146/.263/.188 in 48 at bats with Mayaguez.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Last week, the Sox signed pitcher Norwith Gudino to a minor league contract. The right-hander has been playing for Leones del Caracas, where he has a 5.93 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. He has 16 strikeouts and seven walks. Last season, he pitched in Triple-A in the Giants organization. Darwinzon Hernandez also made four appearances and tossed 2 1/3 frames. He struggled a bit, allowing four runs, as he now has a 4.61 ERA in 13 2/3 innings this winter with 18 strikeouts and eight walks.

Columbian Professional Baseball League
Ronaldo Hernandez is still going strong in the Columbian League. He has routinely been hitting fifth for Tigres de Cartagena and his having a very productive winter, slashing .265/.370/.506 with three long balls across 83 at-bats.
