Minor Notes: GCL season gets underway
Here are Monday's minor league notes:
- Chris and Ian take you through the latest on the organization's depth and the impact that the signing of Chris Owings could have on the 161st episode of the SoxProspects.com podcast. They also discuss draft signings, Michael Chavis, Rafael Devers, scouting reports from Lowell, and the DSL.
- Along with being named the SoxProspects.com Player of the Week, Salem outfielder Marcus Wilson was also named to the MLB Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week.
- Trevor Kelley is having a great season for Pawtucket, and Christopher Smith of MassLive.com got a chance to talk to Mike Shawaryn, Josh Taylor, and Brian Bannister about him. Kelley was a Red Sox fan growing up and he reminds Bannister of Darren O'Day.
- Smith also wrote about Bryan Mata (pictured), who has added a slider this year and has been able to become a two-seam/slider pitcher along with a curve and a change, according to Bannister. He also talks about how the addition of a cutter has helped Thaddeus Ward have the terrific year that he's having. He also mentions Tanner's Houck's sweeping breaking ball and how he has improved as the year has gone on.
- The GCL Red Sox got underway on Monday and you can view their roster here. Notably, former first-round pick and left-handed pitcher Trey Ball will try hitting. He batted fifth today for the GCL Sox and picked up a hit.
