Cup of Coffee: Shawaryn dominates, Chatham racks up five hits


5/4 Cup of Coffee: In game two of a doubleheader, the Sea Dogs recorded the only win of any affiliate on Friday. C.J. Chatham was on fire all day, collecting five hits. Mike Shawaryn (pictured) stood out for the PawSox, with eight shutout innings in a tough loss.

Rochester Red Wings (MIN) 7, Pawtucket Red Sox 1
The final score doesn't reflect how close this one was, as the PawSox surrendered six runs in the top of the ninth. Mike Shawaryn was brilliant and efficient, tossing eight scoreless innings using just 99 pitches. He only struck out three, but only walked one and allowed five hits. Bobby Poyner and Domingo Tapia combined to allow six runs, although only three were earned. Pawtucket only had three hits, with Bryce Brentz and Sam Travis each going 1 for 3 with a double.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 12, Portland Sea Dogs 5 (Game 1; 7 innings)
In game one, Portland suffered a similar loss to Pawtucket, as they let a 5-5 tie turn into a blowout by allowing seven runs in the seventh inning. C.J. Chatham had another good night at the plate, going 3 for 4 with three singles. Jerry Downs went 2 for 3 with a double and Luke Tendler and Jeremy Rivera each belted home runs. Tanner Houck was roughed up for five runs on nine hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings. Andrew Schwaab also struggled out of the bullpen, giving up seven runs (four earned) in just 1 1/3 innings.

Portland Sea Dogs 5, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 3 (Game 2; 7 innings)
Portland held on in game two, as Brett Netzer had a big game with two doubles and two RBI. C.J. Chatham recorded his second multi-hit game of the day, going 2 for 3. He is now batting .329 this year. Daniel McGrath picked up with win by allowing three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Jordan Weems picked up the save with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 scoreless frames.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (CHC) 12, Salem Red Sox 2
Jhonathan Diaz had a night to forget, allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits in just 2 2/3 innings. Dominic LoBrutto was much better in relief, with two strikeouts in a scoreless frame. Position player Deiner Lopez got into this one on the mound, and tossed a clean inning with a strikeout. Marco Hernandez went 2 for 3 with a double, and Pedro Castellanos roped a double. Ryan Fitzgerald had a good night with two walks and a two-run single.

Charleston RiverDogs (NYY) 7, Greenville Drive 5
Thad Ward had an interesting night on the mound, as he struck out eight in just 4 2/3 innings, but walked five and allowed three earned runs. Yorvin Pantoja was solid in relief, striking out three in two innings. Jordan Wren went 2 for 4 with his third home run of the year. Grant Williams roped an RBI triple and Korby Batesole had an RBI double.

Player of the Night: The PawSox lost 7-1, but their starting pitcher, Mike Shawaryn was good enough to earn Player of the Night honors. The 2016 first-round selection lowered his ERA to 2.72 in 36 1/3 innings. He also has a 1.16 WHIP and batters are hitting .236 against him.
