2018 MLB First Year Player Draft picks No. 1-30

The 2018 MLB First Year Player Draft is underway as the first round has now been completed. Casey Mize, a right-handed pitcher from Auburn who no-hit Northeastern earlier this year, had been in talks to be selected No. 1 overall and the Detroit Tigers made it happen as part of an all-college top five. Position players also dominated the top 10, with seven those players selected fielding a position, including three outfielders in prep player Jarred Kelenic as well as collegiate bats Kyler Murray from Oklahoma and Travis Swaggerty from South Alabama.

This is a contrast from last year, as eight of the first 14 selections were high-schoolers, including each of the top three.

Boston selected Triston Casas with the No. 26 pick as a third baseman from American Heritage High School in Florida. Casas is regarded as having exceptional power but could be limited to first base as a professional, though he will begin at first base. He was ranked as the No. 20 prospect in this year's draft by MLB.com, No. 25 by Baseball America, No. 31 by Perfect Game and No. 34 by ESPN.com's Keith Law.

The Red Sox were tabbed as picking Seth Beer and Brice Turang in mock drafts, but Turang was selected No. 21 by the Brewers and they passed over Beer in favor of another power bat, but from the prep ranks. Beer was selected at No. 28 by Houston.
