Minor Notes: Regular season ends, Greenville advances in postseason
Here are Monday's minor league notes:
- In the most recent Scouting Scratch, Director of Scouting Ian Cundall analyzes a couple of Boston's depth pieces in first baseman Sam Travis and right-hander Justin Haley. Travis has suffered from a lack of power this season, hitting .270/.351/.375 in Pawtucket and .306/.393/.429 in 22 games in Boston. Since returning to the Red Sox organization, Haley has pitched to a 2.66 ERA in seven starts but doesn't profile as a major league starter.
- The minor league regular season ended earlier in the week and the Greenville Drive is the only Red Sox affiliate still active. In their most recent game, the Drive shut out Charleston to win the best-of-three series. Greenville will begin a best-of-five series against Kannapolis on Monday as they compete in the South Atlantic League Finals.
- Chad Finn of Boston.com wonders whether the Red Sox made a mistake not promoting Bryce Brentz (pictured) with expanded rosters. The 28-year-old Brentz had a resurgent season in Pawtucket, mashing 31 home runs with a .271/.334/.529 slash line.
- In Brentz and Jeremy Barfield, the Red Sox have a pair of slugging minor league outfielders on the verge of free agency. Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press Herald questions whether the Red Sox will find a way to keep them around. The Red Sox could keep Brentz in Boston by adding him to the 40-man roster this winter, though they'll need to re-sign Barfield to a minor league contract.
- Rafael Devers recently endured his first slump as a major leaguer but he has emerged on the other side and is seeing the ball well once again.
- Hunter Noll of Outside Pitch speculates that right-hander Hildemaro Requena could be a riser in the Red Sox organization. Requena has had a fantastic season in Greenville, holding a 1.98 ERA with 84 strikeouts and 31 walks in 95 1/3 innings. He places 51st in the SoxProspects.com rankings.
- In a move to bolster their roster for the postseason, Greenville added Yoan Aybar and Frankie Rios from Lowell. The Drive also added Brett Netzer from the temporary inactive list and placed both Tyler Hill and Jared Oliver on the list.
