Fall/Winter League Roundup: Vazquez gets into a groove, Basabe impresses


This week's roundup covers play from the period of November 23-29. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in offseason action, check out our Fall and Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through the end of the offseason.

Dominican Professional Baseball League

Marco Hernandez was quiet this week, going 0 for 12 in the four games he entered this week. Hernandez was the only position player prospect to see action this week. 

On the mound, Jonathan Aro made two relief appearances allowing a run on two hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of work. Aro is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in eight games for Licey. Roman Mendez also made two relief appearances, tossing two scoreless innings, both against Escogido. 


Venezuelan Professional Baseball League

Sandy Leon was the lone position player to appear this week, going 4 for 16 with an RBI and a run scored. Leon has had a good offseason thus far, hitting .286/.385/.357 in 17 games.

Luis Ysla continued to pitch well, tossing an inning of scoreless relief across his two appearances out of the bullpen this week. Ysla has yet to allow a run in his six appearances. Edwin Escobar made his fifth start of the offseason on Sunday against Magallanes, allowing an unearned run on two hits and three walks in a five-inning no decision.  

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

Christian Vazquez (pictured, above) saw his first week of consistent action this offseason and responded by going 6 for 16 with two RBI in five games played. Henry Ramos also made his way into five games this week, going 1 for 15 with a double. Ramos is hitting just .197/.315/.289 in 23 games for Caguas. Jeremy Rivera went 0 for 4 this week, entering three of his four games as a defensive replacement. 

Pat Light continued to pitch well, tossing 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing a hit and two walks in his two relief appearances.

From Last Week: Serie de las Americas (Dominican/Venezuela)

We missed this last week, but on November 21-22 in Miami, two teams each from Venezuela and the Dominican Republic participated in the Serie de las Americas, essentially a four-game exhibition tournament. Among the teams participating were the Cardenales de Lara, featuring Edwin Escobar, who started the championship game in a loss to the Aguilas of the Dominican league. Also participating from the Dominican were the Leones del Licey, which feature Marco Hernandez and Jonathan Aro. Statistics have been hard to come by
Venezuelan Liga Paralela

The Boston squad went 1-3-1 this week, moving to 23-13-2 on the season, a half-game back of Lara for first place in the C Division. Luis Alexander Basabe (pictured, right) had a great week, going 11 for 23 with three runs scored and an RBI. Basabe is hitting .457/.537/.674 with a home run and four RBI in 12 games. Hermerson Serven also continued to wield a hot bat, going 8 for 12 with thee RBI. Serven is hitting .322/.394/.402 with a home run and 11 RBI in 27 games.

On the mound, Hildemaro Requena pitched well in his start on Tuesday, tossing five innings, allowing a run on three hits while punching out six in a no-decision. On Wednesday, Ritzi Mendoza continued his strong relief work, tossing four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Mendoza now has a 0.47 ERA in 19.1 innings of relief.
