Cup of Coffee: Moncada breaks out, PawSox lose heartbreaker

5/21 Cup of Coffee: Yoan Moncada (pictured) broke out last night and recorded his first three-hit game in Greenville's win. The bats went silent in the rest of the system, as Pawtucket, Portland, and Salem all lost. Henry Owens didn't have the smoothest outing, but managed to work out of some trouble.

The PawSox dropped a tough low-scoring battle after Henry Owens labored through 5 1/3 innings. He limited the damage, allowing just one earned run, but walked four and scattered five hits. His ERA is down to 3.19, but now has 30 walks in 42 1/3 innings on the season. Dayan Diaz and Dana Eveland combined to go 4 2/3 scoreless innings in relief before Miguel Celestino gave up the winning run in the bottom of the 12th. Pawtucket's offense mustered just six hits and one run in the 12 innings, with Bryce Brentz and Travis Shaw each collecting two hits.

The Sea Dogs also received solid pitching and quiet bats. Starting pitcher Mike Augliera got in a hole early by giving up a run in the first, but settled down nicely pitching 6 2/3 innings while allowing two earned runs. Despite his outing, he took his seventh loss of the year. The offense didn't really get going and posted just six hits and one run. Mike Miller doubled and scored on an Oscar Tejeda RBI single and Marco Hernandez added a pair of singles. Robbie Scott pitched well in relief for Portland, going 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

Teddy Stankiewicz's bad luck continued last night, as his record for the season dropped to 0-5. He got hit hard, allowing 10 hits, two home runs, and five earned runs across six innings of work. Despite the poor outing, his ERA stands at a respectable 4.14. The Red Sox offense got shut out through the first seven innings, and by then it was too late. They had just four hits and scored twice, once on an RBI groundout from Jose Vinicio and once on an RBI double by Wendell Rijo. German Taveras and Mike Adams pitched in relief and both gave up an earned run.

The Drive picked up the only win of the day for the entire Red Sox system. Yoan Moncada stood out offensively, as he collected three singles in four trips to the plate. He is now off to a 4 for 12 start with Greenville. Mauricio Dubon, Cisco Tellez, Ben Moore, and Michael Chavis each had an RBI single. Jeffry Fernandez started for the Drive and went five innings, allowing two earned runs. The bullpen came up big for Greenville as Ryan Harris tossed three innings and allowed one unearned run. Carlos Pinales closed it out and got the win after throwing a scoreless frame.

Player of the Night: On a night that lacked offense, Yoan Moncada shined and was the only member of the farm system with more than two hits. The Red Sox prized 19-year old prospect from Cuba went 3 for 4 and scored a run.
