With 10 rounds of the 2013 draft complete, there is still significant talent available. Much like 2012, teams have been hesitant to draft high school players considered difficult to sign, as the failure to sign a pick in the first 10 rounds results in the team's loss of allocated pool money. Since only those initial 10 rounds count toward the bonus pool, drafting a difficult sign becomes less risky on Day Three, so it would be unsurprising to see some of the top remaining talent come off the board early. The Red Sox seemed to have followed this design in 2012 when they drafted outfielder Jamal Martin in the 11th round. While Boston was unable to come to terms with Martin, the lack of a deal did not carry the consequence of a loss in overall bonus pool money, as it would have if he'd been taken in the first 10 rounds.
