Cup of Coffee: Portland secures lone affiliate victory as Lowell's winning streak ends


8/8 Cup of Coffee: The Sea Dogs brought home the only affiliate victory as Salem, Lowell, the GCL Red Sox and the DSL Red Sox all fell on Tuesday.

Four Portland pitchers and a fast offensive start helped the Sea Dogs hold off the Akron Aeros (CLE), 3-1. Mike MacDonald received the start and tossed 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and a walk, punching out three. Jason Urquidez picked up the victory for his 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. A Marquez Smith (pictured) RBI single and a Peter Hissey bases-loaded walk in the first inning gave Portland a quick 2-0 lead. Leading by one in the third, Smith blasted a solo home run to give the Sea Dogs the two-run advantage. Michael Olmsted, who had 16 saves for Salem, picked up his first save for Portland.

Despite a solid start from Brandon Workman, Salem was eclipsed by the Carolina Mudcats (CLE), 6-2. Workman fell to 7-7 as he hurled 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out nine. Brandon Jacobs laced a solo home run in the fourth and Shannon Wilkerson was 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead the Red Sox offense.

Looking to remain hot, the Spinners five-game winning streak was snapped in a tough 1-0 loss to the Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM). William Cuevas was the tough luck loser, allowing one run on five hits and a walk while punching out four. Gregory Larson allowed just four hits in his 3.0 innings of relief work. Lowell had just four hits, with Jake Davies accounting for half of that total.

Four errors and some rough relief work allowed the GCL Orioles (BAL) to down the GCL Red Sox, 11-4. Madison Younginer, making his first appearance sine June 3, tossed 2.0 innings in his rehab start, allowing a run on one hit, striking out three. Ricardo Betancourt received the loss for for his 2.1 innings of work, allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk. Kevin Mager was 2 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBI in the loss. Nick Moore also had two hits, smacking a solo home run and scoring twice.

A late charge by the DSL Rangers (TEX) allowed them to squeak past the DSL Red Sox, 5-4. Edwar Garcia hurled the first 5.0 innings for the Red Sox, allowing an unearned run on two hits and four walks, striking out two. Javier Rodriguez picked up the loss for allowing an unearned run on three walks in just 0.2 innings pitched. Ricardo Anujar went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Alixon Suarez was 2 for 4 and Osvaldo Almengo was 1 for 3 with three RBI to lead the Red Sox offense.

Player of the Night: Marquez Smith led Portland to victory last night and has had a stellar second half of the season, hitting .362/.431/.585 with three home runs and 15 RBI in the 25 games since the All-Star break.
