SoxProspects.com is pleased to announce its honorees for Player and Pitcher of the Month of June: Ryan Lavarnway and Justin Germano.
In 21 games in June, Lavarnway hit .405/.469/.667 (34-for-84) with four home runs and ten doubles, scoring and batting in 18 runs each, and taking 12 bases on balls versus 13 strikeouts. He also was voted SoxProspects.com Player of the Week of June 18-24 by the SoxProspects.com community. On the season Lavarnway is batting .313/.405/.468 with seven home runs and 18 doubles in 252 at-bats over 67 games played. His .313 batting average currently leads the International League. He is the fourth-ranked prospect in the organization by SoxProspects.com.
Justin Germano had an opt-out in his contract in July and seemed to pitch with that in mind in June, allowing more than a one earned run only once in any of his six appearances. In five starts and one relief appearance (in which he worked six innings) Germano finished the month with a 4-1 record and 1.69 ERA, allowed eight earned runs on 27 hits, struck out 34 while walking only six, and held opposing batters to an .180 average. Germano saved the best for last with an eight inning shutout effort at Lehigh Valley (PHI) June 30, scattering four hits and striking out 10 while walking none en route to the win and a promotion to Boston.
