Iglesias placed on DL; Mark Prior assigned to Pawtucket

Mark Prior (Bill Parmeter)
The Pawtucket Red Sox have announced that starting shortstop Jose Iglesias has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, and right-handed pitcher Mark Prior has been assigned to the team from extended spring training.

Iglesias has not appeared in a game since May 25 due to back stiffness. Originally considered day-to-day, the organization hoped that a DL trip would be avoidable. Per WEEI.com's Alex Speier, Iglesias, was in Boston yesterday to get his back examined, and it was determined Iglesias would need a bit more time off. The move means that Iglesias will not be able to immediately join the Red Sox if second baseman Dustin Pedroia's torn thumb muscle forces him to the disabled list.

Prior, 31, was originally signed to a minor league contract in the beginning of May and initially assigned to extended spring training. The right-hander, who won 18 games and finished third in Cy Young voting in 2003 while with the Cubs, last appeared in the major leagues in 2006. He appeared in a total of 21 games in 2010 and 2011 with the Rangers and Yankees organizations, throwing 24.0 innings. He is expected to pitch exclusively out of the bullpen.

Update: Iglesias's official placement on the DL is retroactive to May 29.
