Sox call up Tommy Hottovy
According to Brian McPherson of the Providence Journal, Left-hander Tommy Hottovy has been called up to replace Rich Hill, who will likely undergo Tommy John surgery.
Hottovy, 29, has been in the Red Sox system for eight years, but did little to distinguish himself before this season. With a lowering of his arm slot to a side arm delivery, he has revived his career over 27.0 innings between Portland and Pawtucket this season. In 14 total appearances he posted a 1.67 ERA with 1 more strikeout than inning pitched, and only 5 walks and 16 hits allowed. He did not allow a hit in 4.0 innings against left-handed batters this season in Triple-A.
Hill had been dominant in 8.0 innings with the Red Sox this year, allowing only 3 hits and no runs with 12 strikeouts. However, the Massachusetts-native's season appears to have been cut short when he released a pitch on June 1 and immediately clutched his elbow in pain. Reports indicate Tommy John surgery is very likely.
