Sutton's big night leads Pawtucket to victory



5/10 Cup of Coffee: The affiliates took 2 of 3 games on Monday, with some noteworthy performances.

Pawtucket put up a 5 spot in the first inning and did not look back as they beat Gwinnett (ATL), 9-2. Drew Sutton led the way, going 3-4 with a walk, 2 home runs and 3 RBI. Tony Thomas went 2-4 and chipped in 3 RBI. Josh Reddick went 1-3 with a walk, a double and 2 runs. Reddick has now drawn an impressive 17 walks in 30 games this season. For comparison’s sake, he drew just 25 walks in 114 games last season. Felix Doubront started for Pawtucket. The lefty went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 hits and a run. Doubront walked 1 and struck out 7 in one of his better starts since being sent down to Pawtucket. Jason Rice picked up the win, as he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief of Doubront. Rice allowed 3 hits, walked 1 and struck out 2.

Portland got great pitching, but couldn’t do anything at the plate as they lost to New Hampshire (TOR), 1-0. Will Middlebrooks and Jorge Padron each went 2-4. Middlebrooks ranks 4th in the Eastern League with a .343 batting average. Stolmy Pimentel started for the Sea Dogs and turned in his best outing this season. He went 6 shutout innings and allowed 3 hits. Pimentel walked 1 and struck out 7. Seth Garrison relieved Pimentel and threw 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts.

Greenville pounded out 14 hits en route to doubling up Asheville (COL), 10-5. Bryce Brentz went 3-6 with a home run and 3 RBI. Brentz was a triple short of hitting for the cycle, and has now hit in 21 straight games. Christian Vazquez went 3-4 with a walk, a home run and 2 RBI. Brandon Jacobs went 2-5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Jacobs is tied for 3rd in the South Atlantic League (with some dude named Bryce Harper) in hitting with a .376 average. Heiker Meneses went 1-4 with 2 walks and a solo home run. Manny Rivera started for the Drive. Rivera did not give up a run in the first 2 innings, with all 6 outs coming via strikeout. However, he gave up 4 runs in the 3rd inning. He pitched just those 3 innings and gave up 7 hits and 4 runs. He walked 2 and struck out 7. Jordan Flasher picked up the win in relief, as he threw 2 shutout innings. He surrendered 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 3.
