Hill, Atchison called up from Pawtucket as Jenks and Wheeler hit DL

After a draining extra inning affair last evening, the Red Sox have recalled relievers Rich Hill and Scott Atchison from Triple-A Pawtucket and placed relievers Bobby Jenks and Dan Wheeler on the 15-day disabled list. The team had an open 40-man roster spot for Hill and therefore did not have to make any further countermoves.

Atchison, 34, has appeared in 9 games this season for Triple-A Pawtucket, going 1-0 with a 1.04 ERA and 1 save with a nifty 17:1 K:BB ratio. The right-hander appeared in 43 games for Boston last season, going 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA in 60.0 innings of relief.

Hill, 31, has also been stellar in his time with Pawtucket this season, going 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 1 save in 16.0 innings pitched. The left-hander appeared in 6 games for Boston last season, going 1-0 while not allowing a run in 4.0 innings. It is important to note that Hill is out of minor league options.

Jenks and Wheeler have both struggled in their inagural season in a Boston uniform. Jenks has posted a 9.35 ERA in 11 games of relief, allowing 13 hits and 9 walks in 8.2 innings pitched. Wheeler has compiled an 11.32 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season, allowing 18 hits in 10.1 innings pitched.
