Wilson's great start propels Portland to victory

Cup of Coffee 4/13: Alex Wilson's superb outing led Portland to victory.

Not much went Pawtucket’s way in its 8-1 loss to Buffalo (NYM). The PawSox managed just 1 run on 4 hits, with the lone run coming on a Yamaico Navarro RBI double in the 4th inning. Josh Reddick went 1 for 3 and drew his fourth walk in 5 games this season. Kris Johnson got the start for Pawtucket and did not fare very well. The lefty lasted just 2.1 innings, giving up 8 hits, 7 runs (6 earned) and 2 home runs. Johnson walked 1 and did not strike out a batter. On the bright side for Pawtucket’s pitching staff, Michael Bowden went the final 3 innings and allowed just a single while striking out 2.

Portland excelled both at the plate and on the mound in their 7-0 victory over Trenton (NYY). Leading the way for the Sea Dogs were Alex Hassan (3 for 5, 2 RBI) and Will Middlebrooks (2 for 4, double). Wilson got the win, going 6 strong innings, allowing just 2 hits and a walk. He struck out 5. Jeremy Kehrt went the final 3 innings without allowing a hit. He walked 1 and struck out 2. In 7.1 innings this season, Kehrt has allowed just 1 hit.

Salem benefited from an unexpected power source to beat Lynchburg (ATL), 4-0. Derrik Gibson went 2 for 4 and hit the third home run of his professional career. Chris Balcom-Miller, in his Salem Red Sox debut, pitched brilliantly. The righty, who came to the Red Sox last year from Colorado in the Manny Delcarmen trade, threw 5 shutout innings. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

Greenville used 12 hits and 5 Riverdog errors to barely squeak past Charleston (NYY) by a score of 15-0. Bryce Brentz went 2 for 4 with a home run, 3 RBI and a walk. Lucas LeBlanc (2 for 5, 3 RBI), Jose Garcia (2 for 5, 3 RBI) and Brandon Jacobs (1 for 3, 1 RBI and 2 walks) also contributed at the plate. Manny Rivera turned in his second excellent start in as many tries this season. The lefty went 5.0 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8.

Player of the Day: Alex Wilson, who went 6 shutout innings to earn the win for Portland.
