In Portland, the phone rings from Fenway
Heading into spring training, the Red Sox 25-man roster looks nearly set barring injuries, save for the last couple of spots in the bullpen. On top of that, the roster of the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox looks like it will be loaded with some well-regarded prospects and a slew of other players with ample major league experience.
But that doesn’t mean that the prospects slated to head north to Double-A Portland this April have no chance to contribute to the major league club this season. To the contrary, the Red Sox front office has a history of promoting players who begin the season with the Sea Dogs to the major league club, whether as a regular or for a September cup of coffee. In fact, Boston has promoted 20 such players over the past six seasons.
