Seven Red Sox prospects headed to the AFL

The initial rosters for the Arizona Fall League were released today, including the roster for the Peoria Javelinas, the team to which Red Sox players will be assigned. Six Red Sox prospects are on the list, including Jason Rice, Daniel Turpen, Seth Garrison, Ryan Lavarnway, Juan Carlos Linares, and Jose Iglesias. The roster also lists one "TBA" pitcher slot for Boston. That spot is expected to be filled by top prospect Casey Kelly, assuming he is back to full health this fall.

The AFL, the most well-respected off-season league, is generally reserved for highly-regarded prospects whom the organization is hoping to see advance in the upcoming season, or for advanced players who missed significant time during the minor league season due to injury. Peoria's schedule gets underway on October 12 and will run through November 18. The Peoria squad will also include players from the Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, and Toronto Blue Jays. Greenville pitching coach Kevin Walker will serve as the pitching coach for the Javelinas.
