Bowden to Boston, Molina designated for assignment

The Red Sox have recalled pitcher Michael Bowden from Triple-A Pawtucket and designated catcher Gustavo Molina for assignment.

Bowden, 23, was moved to the bullpen earlier this month in order to prepare him to help the major league squad. In four outings in relief, he allowed just 1 hit in 6.0 innings while striking out 5. Bowden has compiled a 6-3 record with a 3.52 ERA in 20 games (16 starts) for Pawtucket this season. During his two short stints with Boston during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Bowden was 2-1 with a 8.14 ERA in 9 games (2 starts). Currently ranked the #9 prospect in the Red Sox system according to SoxProspects.com, Bowden will become an important part of the Boston bullpen.

Molina, 28, was originally signed in January as a minor league free agent after spending all of 2009 as part of the Washington organization. Since his promotion to Boston in late June, Molina has gone 1 for 7 in 4 games played. Molina will most likely clear waivers and either accept an assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket or be granted his outright release.
