Sox sign Ryan Shealy
Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Red Sox have signed 30-year-old first baseman Ryan Shealy to a minor league contract. Shealy, who opted out of his minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday, had been hitting .238/.354/.512 for the Triple-A Durham Bulls with 10 home runs and 38 RBI in 48 games.
Shealy, who last appeared in the majors in 2008 with the Kansas City Royals, has compiled a .305/.398/.560 batting line during his nine season minor league career. He was drafted by the Rockies in the 11th round of the 2002 amateur draft, making his major league debut in 2005 with a stellar 36 game cameo in Colorado. Shealy was traded at the trading deadline in 2006 to Kansas City and initially burst on to the scene before being derailed by injuries.
Shealy will report to Triple-A Pawtucket and serve as insurance for the big league squad in case of injury or possible trades.
