Red Sox sign Brentz
According to Jim Callis of BaseballAmerica.com, the Red Sox have signed supplemental first-round pick Bryce Brentz. Brentz, an outfielder with plus power potential, will sign for the slot-recommended bonus of $892,000, equal to that of 2009's 36th overall pick. One of the best college bats in the 2010 Draft, Brentz was a 2009 consensus All-American as the Division 1 leader in batting average (.465) and home runs (28). In 2010, he was hampered by an ankle injury, but still hit .348 with 15 home runs, 47 RBI and an OPS of 1.076. An aggressive hitter with impressive power to all fields, Brentz is slated to open the season in right field for the Lowell Spinners.
