Red Sox select Henry Ramos in the fifth round

With the team's fifth-round pick, the 173rd overall, the Red Sox have selected right fielder Henry Ramos out of Alfonso Casta Martinez High School in Puerto Rico. After starting the draft with three straight college picks, this represents the third round in a row in which the Red Sox went for a high school player.

Ramos, 18, is listed at 6'2" and 190 pounds, and is a switch hitter. He is considered very athletic, and was a high-level soccer player. He has only been playing baseball for about a year, but shows big-time power potential, especially from the right side of the plate. He has below-average speed, but his overall athleticism and strong arm project him to be a solid right fielder defensively.

Overall, Ramos has strong tools, but is very raw. This is a player the Red Sox will attempt to build from the ground up.
