Papelbon activated as Sox shake up bullpen

The Boston Red Sox made a series of roster moves as they returned home Friday to open a nine-game homestand. Closer Jonathan Papelbon has been activated after a stint on the bereavement list and Scott Atchison has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Going the other way, Jeremy Hermida was sent to the DL with bruised ribs and Joe Nelson has been designated for assignment.

Hermida is the second Red Sox outfielder to fall victim to Adrian Beltre, with his rib injury resulting from a collision similar to that of Jacoby Ellsbury. Atchison, who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings since being sent back to Pawtucket last week, will take the place of Nelson in the bullpen. After posting a 9.72 ERA in 8 appearances with the Red Sox, Nelson told reporters that if he clears waivers and is asked to return to Pawtucket, he may opt to retire.
