Q&A with Baseball America's Jim Callis

Baseball America's Jim Callis recently had time to share his thoughts on the Red Sox 2008 draft with Soxprospects.com's Jonathan Singer. Jim Callis is the Executive Editor at Baseball America who also was a contributor towards the 2008 Prospect Handbook and ESPN's 2008 Draft Coverage.

Jonathan Singer: Who were some of the prospects other than Casey Kelly that Boston liked with the #30 pick?

Jim Callis: They chose so low in the first round that you don't usually hear a lot of names associated with that pick. Like everyone else, I thought the Red Sox had some interest in Reese Havens, but he went before them. Before the draft, I had heard them mentioned with Bryan Price, whom they took with their sandwich pick. I heard after the fact that they had some interest in Lonnie Chisenhall, who went one pick in front of them to the Indians. They were very high on Kelly, though, and I don't think they would have popped Chisenhall over him.

JS: Do the Red Sox have a draft budget or do they evaluate each prospect on their own merits, assign a value, and spend as much as they need to within their parameters?

JC: Every team has a budget, but the Red Sox must have as much flexibility as anyone. Obviously, they're as financially well off as any club this side of the Yankees. My impression is that if they think there's a player they want to make a run at, they can. They went well over slot to get Kelly in the first round, Pete Hissey and Ryan Westmoreland in the fourth and fifth rounds, and as far as we can tell, became the first team to crack the $10 million barrier in bonuses for a single draft. (The Royals became the second after signing Hosmer.) And even after doing all that, they offered $2 million for first-round talent Alex Meyer, their 20th-round pick.

JS: So far Casey Kelly has struggled at the plate in the GCL. How long before the Red Sox get him on the mound where many have said he is even a better prospect?

JC: The Red Sox thought Kelly was advanced as any high school pitcher in the draft. They also had some scouts who thought he had a brighter future as a shortstop. He wants to play shortstop right now, and because he had more options than the average draftee (not only could he have attended college, he also could have played quarterback at Tennessee), allowing him to play shortstop was a key part of signing him. He'll pitch in instructional league, and I think there's a good chance that he'll open 2009 as a pitcher/DH, and once he hits an innings limit, spend the rest of the season as a shortstop.

JS: Reports had the Red Sox offering $2 million to Alex Meyer. Did the Red Sox feel they could sign him for that offer?

JC: I think they had their doubts, but I also think they felt like that was a worthy offer for a pitcher considered a first-round talent. Only a handful of high school pitchers ever have gotten a $2 million bonus, and no player drafted after the fifth round ever has gotten such a bonus. They never said this, but if a player doesn't want $2 million dollars, maybe he just doesn't want to sign at this point.

JS: In 3 years who will look more foolish. Alex Meyer for turning down $2 million or the Red Sox not offering more money for a top high school pitching talent?

JC: I think there's a good chance that Meyer will be an early-first-round pick after three years at Kentucky. But I don't see how anyone could call the Red Sox foolish for not offering more than $2 million. As I said, very few high school pitchers ever have been offered that much. They sent a plane to Indiana to bring him to Boston for a physical on deadline day. They pulled out all the stops to try to sign him. I think Meyer has risked more by not signing for $2 million than the Red Sox did by not offering more money. But if he wants to go to college, that's his choice.

JS: The Red Sox paid $3 million for a pair of outfielders in Peter Hissey and Ryan Westmoreland. Give us your take on both and which of them has the higher upside?

JC: Westmoreland has more upside, but they're both similar in they're very athletic outfielders with good speed and hitting ability. The power is probably going to be the last tool to develop for each of them. If you project them out, Westmoreland may profile best as a center fielder and Hissey as a right fielder. Westmoreland has been compared to fellow Rhode Islander Rocco Baldelli, and Hissey has been likened to Paul O'Neil.

JS: It seems like Westmoreland was committed to the $2 million number. How many teams were scared off because of that or was it because of his Vanderbilt commitment?

JC: I think both those things scared teams off. We saw a lot of players sign for over-slot money, but most of those fell lower in the draft than where their talent alone would have dictated. Westmoreland's asking price was the equivalent of the 11th overall pick in the draft, and he wasn't going to go that high, so he fell. Another factor in him sliding to the fifth round is that it's harder to evaluate players in the Northeast because of the lack of competition and the weather. I have had other teams tell me that given better exposure, Westmoreland would have drawn much more attention. We fell into the same trap too, as he ranked No. 113 on our Top 200 Prospects list.

JS: The Red Sox took a trio of college pitchers in the first 3 rounds in Bryan Price, Stephen Fife and Kyle Weiland. All three of them so far are having success in Lowell. What are your thoughts on each of them?

JC: They all have good points and bad points. Price has a tremendous sinker and a hard slider, but Rice didn't trust him enough to pitch him much in 2006 and 2007. Fife also didn't have a lot of success before 2008, but he has an interesting array of pitches. Weiland has a good arm and a deeper repertoire than most relievers, but he also got hit hard much harder than he should have at Notre Dame in the spring. While Price and Weiland were relievers in college this year, the Red Sox may try them as starters.

JS: The Red Sox signed a couple of late round players at the deadline. Which of Hunter Cervenka, Carson Blair or Kyle Stroup has the most upside?

JC: He probably has the lowest profile of the three, but I wouldn't be surprised if Blair becomes the best of the bunch. He's an athletic kid who's probably going to move from shortstop to third base because of his size, but he really profiles well at the hot corner. Cervenka and Stroup do have strong arms.

JS: The Red Sox spent a draft record $10 million plus this year and did not sign any big names in the international free agent market. Do you think that the Red Sox felt like the international free agent market was weaker than in previous years and thus put more money towards the draft?

JC: I'll have to admit that I don't follow the international market as much as the draft. The draft keeps me plenty busy and Ben Badler is all over the international stuff for Baseball America. So I don't know the answer to this question, but my impression is that if the Red Sox liked some international talent, they would have pursued that just like they did in the draft, and I don't know that they would have cut back on the draft. They're sparing no expense to find talent.

JS: Did the Red Sox come away with any impact players in this draft?

JC: The two obvious ones are Kelly and Westmoreland. There aren't many players in the draft with higher ceilings. Hissey and second-round shortstop Derrek Gibson also have a lot of upside. Price could move through the minors very quickly.

JS: Give us your assessment of the Red Sox draft as a whole and will spending all this money prove to be beneficial to the Red Sox 4-5 years down the road?

JC: It's too early to know much for certain, but right now it looks as good as anyone's 2008 draft. If Kelly and Westmoreland pay off like the Red Sox think they will, what look like huge bonuses right now will be bargains.

JS: Which player or players the Red Sox drafted that could end up being steals?

JC: I mentioned Blair earlier, and I think he's a real sleeper. I thought the Red Sox got a pair of nice catching values in sixth-rounder Ryan Lavarnaway and seventh-rounder Tim Federowicz. Righthander Mike Lee (eighth round) and outfielder Bryan Peterson (11th) are two more interesting guys.

Q&A with Jason McLeod

In 2003, Theo Epstein brought Jason McLeod on board as Boston's Director of Scouting Administration. By 2005, McLeod took over the scouting department as Director of Amateur Scouting, and since that time McLeod has done a phenomenal job building the Red Sox minor league system from the ground up, drafting players such as Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Masterson, Clay Buchholz, Lars Anderson, Michael Bowden, and Jed Lowrie. McLeod recently capped off the 2008 draft "signing" season by spending over $10-million in draft signing bonuses, which is believed to be a draft record. By many expert accounts, the Red Sox ended up with the top draft haul of 2008. McLeod is already well into the scouting process for the 2009 draft, but he took some time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions from Mike Andrews and the staff of SoxProspects.com.

Mike Andrews: Understanding that its difficult to evaluate a draft with much precision within a year's time, what are your impressions of Boston 's 2007 draft haul as of August 2008?
Jason McLeod: The first things that come to mind are the injury to Nick Hagadone and Anthony Rizzo’s cancer diagnosis. Both had been coming off impressive debuts (including the Instructional League) and were off to fine starts in 2008. It was an obvious disappointment when Nick went down with the UCL tear, then an even bigger shock when Anthony was diagnosed. On the bright side, Nick is progressing with the normal rehab process of Tommy John surgery and Anthony has been to Fort Myers a couple of times to do light tee drills and to take groundballs. We look forward to having both back on the field at some time in 2009.

As for the rest of the group, there have been some of the normal ups and downs, and results have varied. We took a lot of high school players in 2007, and as with the majority of high school kids in their first full years, there have been some struggles. But in those struggles have also come development, adjustments, and a better understanding of what they need to do to prepare themselves and be successful over a full season. This holds true for both the position players and pitchers. The end-of-year results may not reflect it, but the process and adjustments many of these kids have made over this year have been good, and we look forward to what those end-of-year results will look like in the future.

MA: What have been the major changes in your approach to the draft since you came on as scouting director, and what has influenced those changes?
JM: We’re not reinventing the wheel here. We are simply looking for players who can make an impact on our organization. Within that thought process, we ask our scouts to work extremely hard in getting to know these players inside-and-out. The Draft is a great mechanism that allows us to supply our organization every year with talent. It is our job to properly identify, evaluate, and put ourselves in position to select those talented players.

MA: We noticed you at a few Spinners game earlier this summer. Is that part of a self-evaluation process, or more just playing a role in the development side of things? Is there a process that you use to evaluate your success and improvement areas in the drafting process?
JM: I see all of our minor league clubs throughout the summer with an emphasis on evaluating our full season teams and writing reports on those players. I like to see Lowell and the GCL for a number of reasons. Mainly, it’s to see how our younger players (mostly the first years) are adapting to the professional environment. Also, I don’t get the opportunity to see all of the players we draft in person, so often times it is the first look I get at some of our draftees. Self-evaluation also plays a part in seeing your own organization. There are going to be plenty of times that players don’t hit the projections you’ve placed on them as amateurs, as well as times they surpass what you projected on them. It’s a learning process for me and I find myself continuously asking why a certain kid does or does not hit those projections. Make no mistake, any time I’m at a ballpark, I’ve always got the “evaluating” cap on.

MA: What are the traits that you focus on most when scouting high-school age position players and pitchers? Which of those traits are personified by Casey Kelly and Derrik Gibson?
JM
: Athleticism is always important, but it’s not just how fast a kid can run or how high he can jump. Athleticism on the baseball field can often be defined by how easy a kid's actions are. This can be applied to both pitchers and position players. Baseball players come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have a certain way they control their bodies. Derrik and Casey are both athletic in their own way. Casey has an easy, graceful nature about him both in the field and on the mound. Derrik is more of the fast twitch, quick burst variety. What both have is an understanding of how to play the game the right way, and they have the skill and athleticism to do it. We’re always looking for tools in all the players we scout which are easily identifiable as it pertains to speed, power, arm strength, etc. The mental psyche of a high school player will always play a big part in our selecting them, because it is the mental maturity that will allow the player to handle not only the learning curve, but also the natural growing-up process involved with being away from home.

MA: In the early rounds you selected a few college-age pitchers without a ton of "mileage" on their arms, including Bryan Price, Stephen Fife, and Kyle Weiland. Each are excelling at Lowell so far this year. What attracted Boston to those pitchers? Is the plan to use them each as starters in 2009?
JM: Simply put, we liked the size and stuff of all three and felt they all had a chance to start down the road. Price and Weiland were relieving in college, but our staff felt they had the attributes we look for in starting pitchers. As with most college relievers, they weren’t easy to see because it’s rare you get a guarantee on whey they will pitch. However, with the looks we did get we were confident that with their ability and the work of our player development staff, they would be able to make the transition. Stephen Fife was pitching in a launching pad in Utah, but really came on midway through the season, and we liked that he could sink the baseball while showing us a plus curveball and a very usable change up. Their early results have been good, and we look forward to continuing their development in the Instructional League with the thought of all three being in starting roles next year.

MA: College catchers Ryan Lavarnway and Tim Federowicz were selected back-to-back in the sixth and seventh rounds, respectively. What can you share with us in terms of the differences and similarities of their present tools? Might Lavarnway get some time in the field at other positions?
JM: Catching is always a position of need, and you can never have too many. There are differences in their games with FedEx being a bit more advanced defensively, and Ryan being a more offensive oriented guy. Ryan is just coming back from a hand injury that sidelined him for about three months, so he’s rightfully gotten off to a slow start as he gets his timing back. FedEx has been very good defensively and has been impressive throwing would-be base-stealers out. We selected both because we feel they have major league potential as catchers, so right now there are no plans to expose either one of them to another position.

MA: Pete Hissey and Ryan Westmoreland both inked above-slot signing bonuses at the August 15th deadline. What attributes did you see in those players that other teams might have missed in passing on them?
JM: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I wouldn’t say other teams “missed” on them. We felt (and feel) that both players have a chance to be very good, and their bonuses are a reflection of that. It is true that there wasn’t a lot of scouting activity on them, at least while I or other members of our crosschecking staff were in attendance. This could be due to the cold weather high school factor, as well as both being good students with commitments to quality academic institutions. As for their abilities, both players are very athletic and showed advanced hitting approaches from the left side of the plate. Both are plus runners and have shown quality actions in centerfield during our time scouting them. Physically, Ryan is the stronger of the two as he is big and broad, with Pete being more lean and slender. We’ve had the opportunity to see both play against quality competition in the summer with wood bats, and they did nothing but solidify our convictions of their abilities.

MA: Since you have become the scouting director, it has been apparent that the Sox attempt to take full advantage of the period between the draft and the signing deadline(s) to evaluate the late-round "signability picks". How has this evaluation process evolved - is it as much a scouting process as it is a recruiting process?
JM: I think anytime you have the opportunity to “control” a players' draft rights (in the case of a summer follow, it’s approximately two months), you establish a relationship with a player and his family. During this relationship building, there is a natural recruitment process that goes on as it pertains to informing the player about our organization. You have to remember, most of the high school players we draft have already signed scholarships from the prior summer or fall, so that particular university has had 9 – 12 months of relationship building. In the case of a summer follow who is unsure of signing, we have about two months to inform them of what it would be like to be a member of our organization.
Most of the summer process is simply scouting the player and getting to know how important the game is to him and if he truly wants to sign now. A perfect example is the Lars Anderson signing in 2006. Most clubs thought Lars was unsignable. He didn’t have the best spring to support the purported bonus amount that was being thrown around, and on top of that he was a 4.0 student with a scholarship to Berkley. We took him late in the draft and got to spend plenty of time not only evaluating, but also getting to know him and his family that summer. By the time August rolled around, it was apparent to us that he was one of the better high school hitters in that draft. Most importantly, after educating him about professional baseball and the Red Sox organization, he wanted to sign.

MA: What function does the "Fenway Summer Classic" play in that process?
JM: The Fenway Classic was the great brain child of my assistant, Amiel Sawdaye. It provided us the opportunity to see our drafted players against quality competition in a major league setting. In addition, it allowed the players and their families to get a feel for our organization and access to ask any questions that came to mind. I’m proud to say we ended up signing eight of the players who attended that day.

MA: Its been reported that the Red Sox spent over $10-million in signing bonuses in this draft, which is likely a draft record. Did you go into the signing period looking to make a big splash, or was it just a matter of really liking the players that fell to you in the draft?
JM: We go into each draft looking to take the best players we possibly can. With 29 other clubs selecting, it’s tough to predict who is going to be around at a certain selection. It’s just so happened that we’ve identified players whom we believe have high upside with a chance to reach our projections, and those players have been on the board when we’ve selected in later rounds.

The 2004 Draft: 4 Years Later

Four years have passed since the 2004 draft, the second in the Theo Epstein regime. In the previous year, the Sox had sought to fill in the higher levels of the organization, only selecting one high school player in the first ten rounds. In 2004, with the farm system still not as strong as Epstein wanted it, Boston once again focused heavily on college players. Without a first-round pick due to the free agent signing of reliever Keith Foulke, the Red Sox went into the draft a bit behind the eight-ball. Following the pattern of the previous draft, thirteen of the first fourteen selections were college players, and the team signed just one high-school player in the draft class.

The Red Sox first pick did not come until late in the second round, when they selected Arizona State All-American shortstop Dustin Pedroia. Boston signed Pedroia in July of that year for a $575,000 bonus, and he was sent to the Class-A Augusta Green Jackets. Pedroia batted .400 in twelve games in August and was quickly promoted to High Class-A Sarasota. He continued to hit there, batting .336 over 107 at bats. That fall he played in the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a .745 OPS. In 2005, he began the season in AA Portland where he hit .324 before earning a mid-season promotion to Pawtucket. He cooled off a bit in AAA, due in no small part to a wrist injury that sidelined him for some time and continued to bother him, posting a .255 average and a .738 OPS in 204 at bats. Pedroia returned to Pawtucket to begin the 2006 season, returning to form with a .305 batting average. Another injury in August prevented his call up to the majors until September, where his hit .191 in 89 at bats. That winter, the Red Sox let incumbent 2B Mark Loretta leave for free agency, as they were intent on having Pedroia as the everyday second baseman despite his struggles in limited big league time in 2006. After struggling for about six weeks to begin 2007, Pedroia dominated for the remainder of the season, ultimately hitting .317 with 8 home runs and 50 RBI on the way to winning the American League Rookie of Year Award. In 2008, he has followed up his impressive rookie season by earning a starting spot on the AL All Star team and competing for the AL batting title.

In the third and fourth rounds, the Red Sox drafted a pair of college left-handed pitchers, both based largely on performance over potential. Andrew Dobies (3rd Round, Virginia) and Tommy Hottovy (4th Round, Wichita St.) both had early success in 2004 with the Lowell Spinners. Dobies posted a 2.03 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings, while Hottovy had a 0.89 era with 39 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings. Dobies was solid in 2005 and 2006 between Greenville, Wilmington and Portland before being converted to a reliever in 2007. Dobies has been out the entire 2008 season due to an arm injury and it is unknown if he will return this season. Hottovy struggled in Wilmington during the 2005 season, and had a solid-but-unspectacular 2006 campaign between Wilmington and Portland. In 2007, he took a step back, going 4-10 with a 5.61 ERA. This season, he has only pitched in two games, and has spent much of the season on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. At this point, it seems unlikely that Dobies or Hottovy will beak into the majors with Boston, but if either of these lefties could overcome their injury problems, they could get a shot to prove themselves somewhere.

In rounds five through eleven, the Red Sox drafted seven college players and ultimately signed six of them. Reliever Ryan Schroyer (5th Round, San Diego St.) pitched three years in the system, only making it past High Class A for a four-game stint with Pawtucket as a roster fill-in in 2006. Relief pitcher Cla Meredith (6th Round, VCU) was a nice find, and got off to a great start in 2004 and 2005. Meredith shot up through the system and within a year of being drafted was in the big leagues, where in his first game he gave up a grand slam to Richie Sexson of the Seattle Mariners. He was sent back to Pawtucket before being traded with catcher Josh Bard to San Diego in the deal that brought Doug Mirabelli back to Boston, and he has become a regular contributor for the Padres in relief. Catcher Patrick Perry (7th Round, N. Colorado), RHP Kyle Bono (8th Round, Central Florida), and OF Matt Van Der Bosch (9th Round, Oral Roberts) were all out of the organization by 2006, with Bono being used in a trade for Jose Cruz, Jr. Tenth round pick Steve Pearce out of South Carolina did not sign, but was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates the following season, and reached the majors in 2007. Pearce has spent much of the 2008 season in AAA. Ryan Phillips (11th Round, Barton County CC) showed some promise as a left hander in 2005 and 2006 before injuries derailed his career. He retired in March of 2008.

The only high school player the Red Sox signed was twelfth round pick Michael Rozier, a left-handed pitcher out Henry County High School in Georgia. Seen as having great potential at the time, Rozier was signed away from a football scholarship to North Carolina, where was to play quarterback for the Tar Heels. He received a signing bonus of $1,575,000, which was the highest bonus ever given to a Red Sox draftee until 2008. He showed some progress in 2005 and 2006, but still struggled a bit with his control. In 2007, he showed up to spring training out of shape, and had a brutal season with Lancaster, going 4-9 with a 7.74era. At the end of the 2007 season, Rozier was struck in the head by batted balls on two occasions. He again appeared overweight at camp in 2008, and was unable to break spring training with a full season affiliate. Moved to the bullpen, he’s toiled between a rehab stint in the Gulf Coast League and a July assignment to Greenville, and currently has a cumulative ERA of 10.53 for the season.

Outside of LHP Randy Beam (18th Round, Florida Atlantic, one time a top-twenty prospect), who was released after struggling with injuries for two seasons, and 1B Mike Jones (25th Round, Arizona Western), the draft produced no other significant prospects. Only four players selected outside of the top 12 rounds remain in the organization: RHP Matt Goodson (23rd Round, Texas), Jones, RHP Mike James (28th Round, Connecticut), and C/3B Zak Farkes (39th round, Harvard). Goodson and James are repeating AA with the Sea Dogs in 2008, and Jones is still trying to tap into his potential with the Lancaster JetHawks. Also, then-3B Zak Farkes of Harvard was selected in the 39th Round, but did not sign. He signed with the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent the following season, was converted to catcher, and is currently with Lancaster. Undrafted free agents John Otness and Bryan Pritz also both remain with the organization in Portland.

The one other player of note taken by the Sox in this draft was soft-tossing left-hander RJ Swindle (14th Round, Charleston Southern). Despite finishing with 56 strikeouts to just four walks in 51 innings with Lowell, he was released before the 2005 season. Swindle’s fastball sits in the low-to-mid 80s and a curveball in the low 50s, which is the likely reason he is with his third organization in spite of lights-out numbers at nearly every minor league stop. He made his Major League debut earlier this season with the Philadelphia Phillies. Swindle currently has a 2.17 ERA and 40 strikeouts to just 6 walks in 29 innings for the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs.

Much like the 2003 draft was limited in terms of eventually providing Major League talent, the same can be said with the 2004 draft. The majority of the players the Red Sox selected had limited upside to begin with. Even though most of the players in this particular draft did not pan out, it still has to be considered a success if solely due to Pedroia’s development. Ultimately, the Red Sox also accomplished one goal of building minor league depth at the upper levels of the system. With that accomplished, the Sox began to focus more heavily on developmental prospects in the subsequent drafts, a philosophy that has paid huge dividends.

Q&A with Richie Lentz

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Sea Dog relief pitcher and Sox prospect Richie Lentz at Hadlock Field to talk about his career as a professional to date. Drafted by the Red Sox in 2006, he began this season in Lancaster where he compiled a 2.87 ERA and struck out 77 in 53.1 innings. He held opposing hitters to a .174 BA. He was also selected Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June. Since his promotion to Portland, he has compiled an ERA of 2.81, with 22 Ks in 16 innings at the time of this interview.

Don Hyslop: Before you signed as a professional, who were the most influential people in your development as a baseball player?
Richie Lentz
: I would say that the most influential person would most definitely be my Dad. I became a pitcher in college and I began to put my energy and focus into that. He was the person who gave me the most knowledge about pitching. Two others would be my brothers. I grew up idolizing my older brother and my younger brother is just a year younger. It all started with wiffle ball in the backyard and had led me to where I am at today.

DH: Coming out of high school you were a highly regarded player, did you consider other options or was the University of Washington always your first choice?
RL: It was always my first choice. I had set up recruiting trips to other schools and had a lot of offers for both pitching and outfield. My older brother had played for the University of Washington. I grew up being a bat boy for the Huskies. I really liked and respected the head coach, Ken Knutson and the offer wasn't one to turn down. I was happy to play close to home and I love the city of Seattle. It was a great opportunity to play for a great program and network in the place I want to live.

DH: Did the injury you suffered in 05 have much psychological impact on you?
RL
: A little bit, coming off the surgery I didn't have friends that had gone through the procedure. I didn't have many people to talk to about what I had gone through. There were several times I thought that my ulna nerve was torn close to my surgery time. After, it was hard to let go. Being a power pitcher it was hard for me to throw hard for the first ten months. It was definitely difficult. I love talking to people that have just had the surgery and tell them you can really let go after the surgery and not fear reinjury. Pyschologically it was difficult throwing sliders again as well.

DH: What was your reaction to being drafted by the Red Sox? Did you have an idea that they might be interested in you?
RL: Yeah, there were a few teams that had told me I would be going in the later rounds of the first day. When the first day had passed and I hadn't heard my name called, I was pretty bummed. The Sox Seattle scout told me that they were going to take me with their first pick on the second day. I didn't know what to expect but I was really happy to be taken by them. I love the local scout there. I know John Otness, he went to school with me and I had played with Jon Lester in high school. I was thrilled to be taken by the Red Sox.

DH: Was there a particular reason you delayed your signing until you had played a few games in the New England Collegiate Baseball League with Newport that summer?
RL: The Sox asked me to do that. I had only thrown a few innings in college after my surgery. I went back to the New England League to throw in front of them. The local Sox scout came and saw me a few times and then Jason MacLeod had kind of the final say and I signed after he saw me throw.

DH: Reading your website, it is apparent that family is very important to you. Have they had a chance to see you play on the East Coast yet?
RL: No, not yet. They saw me play in Lancaster, both of my parents and my grandmother. I am not sure there is going to be a trip in August but hopefully next season I will be back somewhere on the East Coast and I can get them out here. They have only seen me pitch professionally once.

DH: In a scouting report I read it mentioned that your slider and change up needed some refinement. Is that a fair comment or are you happy with them now?
RL: I am not sure who writes those reports or when they were written but I would say that at the end of last season that would have been a very fair assessment. After this season, I would hope to get a much better evaluation. I have worked a lot this year on my slider. It has been an organizational goal for me both to improve that pitch and to throw it more often. I almost feel paying less attention to my change up has made it a better pitch for me. So right now, I am very comfortable with all three pitches. Not saying that all three are top notch every day but I am very comfortable with all three right now.

DH: Is your fastball still your out pitch?
RL: That is the pitch I go to most often for a strikeout.

DH: Do you throw a 2 seam, 4 seam or both?
RL: I throw a 4 seam but because of my arm angle, a 3/4 delivery, sometimes I get a 2 seam run on it.

DH: Are you comfortable at this point in your career with giving your catcher a lot of say in your pitch selection?
RL: Every catcher that I have worked with professionally has impressed me greatly with their game calling abilities. Somewhere along the line, someone mentioned that the catcher is just the suggestor and the pitcher is the one with the control. It is always the pitcher's final say with what gets thrown but I have really been impressed with the catchers, especially here. They keep detailed notebooks on hitters which I have the opportunity to look at prior to games. I give them considerable control as I don't really know the hitters here that well yet.

DH: Some have suggested that the jump from A to AA is the toughest one in the minor leagues. Have you found that to be true?
RL: I think that the basic approach stays the same. The biggest thing I notice here is that if I fall behind in the count and I throw a fastball down the middle for a strike, in A ball that will dodge the bat where here that is a lot more dangerous. The hitters here have an incredible ability to square up the fastball no matter what side of the plate it is on. As long as your ahead in the count you'll be in the drivers seat but once you fall behind AA is a lot more dangerous.

DH: What were your impressions of pitching in Lancaster? Was it really difficult with the conditions there?
RL: I would say it's more difficult. The surface in Lancaster is really hard as well. If your a ground ball pitcher I think a lot more ground balls get through there that in other parks don't. The wind does often blow out to right with a force of between 35-55 mph so I would say the more ground balls you induce the better. I am a strikeout- flyball pitcher and I gave up three home runs while there but only one of those could I claim was aided by the wind. With the other two, one reached the highway and the other was over the scoreboard. Personally I did not notice a difference but if you look at the statistics there is a dramatic difference. When I left, I think our road ERA was about 2.30 while at home it was around 6.00.

DH: When the Sox move their affiliation to Salem next season do you think that will be a plus for the pitchers or will they lose something in not having to battle in more severe conditions.
DL: I feel Lancaster made me a better pitcher. I am glad I had the opportunity to pitch there this year. That being said there will be an advantage for high A pitchers next year. It will be much easier to move up to AA for spot starts. I don't think the organization wants to fly someone across the country for one outing. For the high A guys this will now be a big advantage.

DH: Do you still keep in touch with Nick Hagadone? [Editor's Note: Lentz and Hagadone attended the University of Washington together]
RL: I haven't done a good job in keeping in touch with him since his surgery. I will see him a lot this off season and might throw with him a little bit. I am excited to see where he is at. He is as mentally tough and as hard a worker as they come.

DH: So you have no worries about him battling through this?
RL: No, I would bet 100% that with the attention that you get at Ft. Myers, the job of rehab there with Jim Young and the amount of work that Nick will put in there is no doubt in my mind that he will be back next year throwing as good as ever.

DH: Which teammate(s) have impressed you the most this year either at Lancaster or Portland?
RL: I am going to have to give this award to Josh Reddick. His great year last year opened a lot of eyes and he has had a great season this year as well. I would say that he has been really impressive saving a home run from being hit off me as well as several other outstanding catches to get me out of tight situations.

DH: If you had the chance to critique yourself, what would you say?
RL: I would say that my attributes are that I pitch aggressively. I am not afraid to throw my fastball whether ahead or behind in the count. My drawback would be my lack of consistency which I am working on, ie the ability to command the strike zone rather than to control it. If I could throw to quarters of the plate rather that to halves of it, I think that would be of great benefit to me.

DH: Final question Richie, how would you compare Lancaster and Portland as far as off the field activities go?
RL: To be honest, there is not much to do in Lancaster. I think we found a bowling alley, a driving range and a golf course. Here, I haven't had the chance to do too much due to the amount of time we spend at the field but scenic wise it is a beautiful place. It was great being able to take drives out to the Mojave Desert but you do feel that you have moved up a notch being here in Portland.

DH: Plus you are just a ferry ride from Nova Scotia.
RL: Yeah, there you go. It is a blessing to come here. I am really happy here.

DH: Thanks Richie!

Bailey, 29, is .301/.405/.562 (.967 OPS) line hitting 25 home runs, 28 doubles and three triples over 418 Pawtucket ABs. In eight games with the big club this year Bailey is 0/5 with three walks, his last appearance coming as a pinch hitter July 9 against Minnesota ... In other roster moves, the Red Sox claimed RHP Marcus McBeth off waivers from Cincinnati and have optioned him to Pawtucket. In order to make room for McBeth on the 40-man roster, Boston has designated RHP Lincoln Holdzkom for assignment.

Player of the Week, 8/4-10: Lars Anderson

Portland 1B Lars Anderson received a record 98.9 percent of votes cast in last week's SoxProspects.com Player of the Week voting (August 4-10) in recognition of a week in which he hit three home runs and four doubles in 29 ABs, and posted a .345/.472/.793 (1.265 OPS) line, continuing his torrid pace since being promoted to Portland. Red Sox affiliates preparing for the stretch run

August in the minors = September in the Bigs. The goal of the farm system is to develop players for the Major League club, but most of the teams in the Red Sox organization are in great shape as the hunt for playoff spots hits the home stretch. Here's the rundown.

Pawtucket (69-44, 1st IL North)
The Pawsox are currently a half game up on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (69-45) in the IL North with eight games left between the two clubs, including a six-game stretch (two in Pawtucket, four in SWB) beginning tomorrow. In the International League, the three division winners and one wild card team make the playoffs. The next-best second-place team, the Toledo Mud Hens (DET), are 62-51, meaning the Pawsox have a relatively comfy seven-game cushion for a playoff spot with 31 games to play. SS Jed Lowrie is likely in Boston for good and 1B/OF Brandon Moss is gone, so the lineup has taken some hits, but 1B/LF Jeff Bailey, 2B Joe Thurston, LF/DH Chris Carter, and CF Jon Van Every are all hitting well. The strength here is in the rotation though, as the Charlie Zink/David Pauley/Devern Hansack/Michael Bowden/Edgar Martinez combo should at least match any rotation in the league. The one question is how September call-ups will hurt the club. If a player isn't essential, the Sox typically leave him in Pawtucket for a playoff run, but the possible need for bullpen help could be too pressing.

Portland (59-49, 2nd EL Northern)
The Sea Dogs are currently 6 games behind the Trenton Thunder (66-44, NYY) for first place in the division, and 2.5 games up on the Binghamton Mets (59-54) for second place and a playoff spot. The loss of Michael Bowden is huge as is the likely loss of Bubba Bell for the season. Not as obvious is the possible loss of Beau Vaughan, the team's closer, to promotion as well. Portland's success from here on out depends on how quickly recent call-ups 1B Lars Anderson, SS Argenis Diaz, 3B Jorge Jimenez, OF Josh Reddick, and RP Richie Lentz figure out Double-A. Kris Johnson will be counted on to be the team's ace, while someone from the bullpen, possibly Daniel Bard, may have to step up and close with Vaughan gone. Two of the team's games were canceled due to rain outs, as the teams involved were not going to play again this season, so the club's apparent 5-game lead in the loss column on Binghamton isn't as big as it seems.

Lancaster (21-18, 2nd Cal Lg South 2nd Half/36-34, 1st Cal Lg South 1st Half - CLINCHED)
For the second year in a row, the JetHawks will be in the playoffs, as they won the California League South's first-half title. As it is, the JetHawks are just 1/2 game behind the Inland Empire 66ers (LAD) for the South's second-half title as well, but at this point the team is playing for pride until the playoffs. Lancaster will play the winner of the top other two teams in the Division Playoffs. In addition to the aformentioned recent call-ups, SP Adam Mills is another player who was a large part of that first-half title but is now in Portland. CF Jason Place seems to be getting better each month. OF Daniel Nava is now playing every day and still hitting at his torrid pace, and mid-season promotees C Luis Exposito and SS Yamaico Navarro have hit from the moment they got to California. The imminent promotion of SP Felix Doubront could also be a boon, if the young lefty can adjust to pitching in The Hangar quickly.

Greenville (20-19, 4th SAL Southern 2nd Half/40-30, 4th SAL Southern 1st Half)
The Drive have the most ground to make up to earn a playoff berth, despite having a roster described by some as being the most prospect-laden in the Red Sox system. In the SAL, the first- and second-half champions in each division make the playoffs, so the Drive will have to make up 4.5 games to catch the Augusta Greenjackets (SFG), who are 25-15. Losing Doubront will not help the team's chances any, but the recent promotion of SP Brock Huntzinger from Lowell could help make up for his loss. Still, with the team's youth and the recent losses of CF Che-Hsuan Lin (Olympics), Navarro, and 1B Mike Jones (promotion), it will certainly be an uphill climb.

Lowell (21-20, 1st NYPL Stedler)
If the full-season leagues are marathons, then the short-season leagues are sprints. The Spinners lead the Oneonta Tigers and Vermont Lake Monsters (WAS) by 2 games for the Stedler Division lead. They will likely need to hold that lead to make the playoffs, as they are behind the current wild card leaders, the Batavia Muckdogs (STL), by 5 games, and are behind another team and tied with three more in that race. Great seasons from RF Mitch Dening and LF Luis Sumoza have somewhat offset disappointing campaigns from 3B Will Middlebrooks and SS Ryan Dent. Recently-signed C Ryan Lavarnway will hopefully team with Tim Federowicz to give the Spinners two catchers who can hit at a position that was a real weakness in the lineup early in the season. 1B Ricardo Burgos has also shown good power since taking over the starting job from Carlos Fernandez. On the mound, the loss of 5-0 Huntzinger will hurt, but the team is stocked with talented young arms like Bryan Price, Stolmy Pimental, Kyle Weiland, Drake Britton, Stephen Fife, and Seth Garrison, and should be able to cope.

GCL Red Sox (18-15, 3rd GCL South)
The GCL Sox are in third place, but they're just 2.5 games behind the deadlocked Pirates and Twins. The Ft. Myers Sox's lineup is already stacked after recent signings, with more stud prospects possibly on the way. In the infield, Joantoni Garcia, Casey Kelly, and Derrik Gibson have been rotating time at 2B, SS, 3B, and DH, with Garcia and Gibson already putting forth great showings at the plate while Kelly is slowly getting on track. The outfield is quite crowded. Recently, speedster Wilfred Pichardo and Roberto Ramos have been platooning in CF, while the corners have been manned by Roberto Feliz, Bryan Peterson, Tyler Yockey, and Andrew Frezza. Wang-Yi Lin has been the top arm in the rotation, while Swen Huijer has been impressive in the bullpen.

DSL Red Sox (32-20, 3rd DSL Boca Chica South)
The DSL Sox lineup was simply bad early in the season, but excellent pitching made up for it. However, the bats have come around recently, as the Sox sit 4 games behind the first-place Giants and 1.5 games behind Rangers 1 for the wild card. All-Stars RF Juan Bonifacio and C Leonel Escobar have led the team at the plate, with the recently hot 2B Rafael Espinoza's stats slowly climbing as well. Manny Rivera and Roman Mendez have been lights out on the mound, leading a strong rotation that features no pitcher with an ERA over 3.80. In fact, 11 pitchers with at least 17 innings pitched have an ERA under 4 on the squad.

Chris Smith recalled

The Red Sox have recalled RHP Chris Smith from Pawtucket to (at least temporarily) fill the vacant spot in the 'pen resulting from RHP Craig Hansen being dealt to the Pirates yesterday. Smith, 27, who last pitched for the Sox June 30, is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA, allowing two earned runs on three hits over 6.1 innings in three appearances with the big club. He is 1-3 with a 2.24 ERA with 13 saves over 52.1 IP with Pawtucket, striking out 47 while walking only 8, and has held opposing batters to a .227 batting average.
