Michael Almanzar Promoted to Greenville

In a week that saw a flurry of Red Sox minor leaguers earning promotions, Saturday saw yet another as 17-year-old third baseman Michael Almanzar was promoted to the Single-A Greenville Drive from the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Rated as the #10 prospect in the Red Sox system by SoxProspects.com, Almanzar hit .348 in 23 games in the GCL this spring in his first professional action. Almanzar received a $1.5 million bonus when he signed with Boston last season, a club record for a Latin American player. He is expected to be the Drive's starting third baseman once he reports.

To make room for Almanzar, Drive catcher Ty Weeden was placed on the DL with a knee injury.
