Sea Dog lead for final playoff spot reduced to 1/2 game


9/1 Cup of Coffee: Last night, Pawtucket fell 9-3 to Scranton/WB. Mike Burns (4-9) started and went 5 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 BB. He had 6 Ks. Edgar Martinez threw 2 1/3 frames and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and a BB. He had 1 K. Craig Hansen continued to pitch well throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits and a BB. George Kottaras went 2 for 3 with a RBI. Bobby Scales went 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI. He is hitting .297. Royce Clayton went 0 for 4 with 2 Ks. He is hitting .143.

New Britain doubled the score on Portland 10-5. The loss reduced the Sea Dogs lead for the final playoff spot to just a half game. Justin Masterson went 4 innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits and 3 BB. He had 3 Ks. Andrew Dobies (4-3) took the loss giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and a BB in 1 2/3 innings. He had 4 Ks. Beau Vaughan threw 1 1/3 frames and gave up 1 run on 3 hits and a BB. Jose Vaquedano threw a scoreless inning allowing 1 BB. Tony Granadillo went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI. Aaron Bates went 2 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI. John Otness went 3 for 5 and scored a run. Iggy Suarez went 4 for 4 and scored 2 runs.

Lancaster defeated High Desert 9-2. Adam Cox (2-1) went 6 innings and gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 4 BB. He had 3 Ks. TJ Large pitched the final 3 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits. He had 2 Ks. Brad Correll went 2 for 5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Jon Still went 2 for 3 with a RBI. Zak Farkes went 3 for 5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.

Augusta hammered Greenville 9-1. Ryan Phillips (3-4) went 3 2/3 innings giving up 6 runs on 4 hits and 4 BB. He had 5 Ks. Jorge Rodriguez went 2 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 1 hit and 5 BB. He had 2 Ks. Chris Province threw 2 innings and did not give up a run. He allowed 1 hit and a BB while fanning 3. Josh Papelbon pitched a perfect 9th striking out 2 of the 3 hitters he faced. Reid Engel went 3 for 4 with a home run.

Tri-City blanked Lowell 10-0. Nick Hagadone started and threw 3 scoreless innings. He allowed 1 hit and 3 BB. He had 5 Ks. Adam Blackley (2-2) took the loss allowing 6 runs on 1 hit and 6 BB in 1 1/3 innings. He had 1 K. Carlos Gonzalez threw 3 2/3 frames giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and a BB. He had 4 Ks. Eric Beattie pitched the final inning and allowed 1 run on 3 BB. He had 2 Ks. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva went 2 for 3.
