Portland tied for last playoff spot with 1 game left


9/3 Cup of Coffee: Games on Sunday saw Scranton/WB blank Pawtucket 4-0. John Barnes (1-1) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and a BB. Jeff Farnsworth pitched the final 2 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits. He had 1 K. He had 5 Ks. Bobby Scales and Joe McEwing each went 2 for 4.

Portland lost both games of their doubleheader with New Britain. New Hampshire also lost which left the teams tied for the final playoff spot with 1 game remaining. The Sea Dogs lost 12-3 in the first game. Felix Diaz (4-4) went 1 1/3 innings allowing 8 runs on 8 hits. Tommy Hottovy gave up 3 runs on 4 hits in 1 inning of work. He had 2 Ks. Jose Vaquedano went 2 2/3 innings and allowed 1 run on 2 hits. He had 5 Ks. Mike James threw a scoreless inning giving up 1 hit and 1 BB. Jay Johnson went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 runs scored. Andrew Pinckney went 1 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBI. In the second game, New Britain edged the Dogs 3-2. Michael Bowden (8-6) pitched the complete game going 6 innings. Lancaster lost to High Desert 6-4. TJ Nall (1-4) went 6 innings giving up 6 runs on 11 hits and a BB. He had 6 Ks. Ismael Casillas threw 2 perfect innings with 1 K. Steve Garrabrants went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. Zak Farkes went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.

Asheville defeated Greenville 5-2. Daniel Bard started and went 4 2/3 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 5 BB. He had 4 Ks. Chris Jones went 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings. He gave up 3 BB. He had 4 Ks. Josh Papelbon (5-8) went 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed 3 runs on 2 hits. He had 2 Ks. Reid Engel went 2 for 4 with a home run. Mike Chambers went 2 for 4.
