Chris Smith's relief effort helps Portland to victory
5/3 Cup of Coffee: Indianapolis defeated Pawtucket 5-1. Jon Lester started and went 3 innings. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 BB. He had 4 Ks. He left the game after 63 pitches after developing cramping in his left arm. Bryan Corey went 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. He had 1 K. Javier Lopez went 2 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits. He had 3 Ks. Travis Hughes pitched the final 1 2/3 innings. He did not allow a run on 2 hits. He struck out 2 hitters. Bobby Scales went 2 for 4. Joe McEwing went 2 for 3. Brandon Moss went 1 for 2 with a home run.
Portland defeated Bowie 9-6. Andrew Dobies (2-0) went 5 innings and earned the victory. He gave up 6 runs on 7 hits and 2 BB. He had 2 Ks. Chris Smith pitched 3 scoreless innings giving up just 1 hit while striking out 3. Mike James pitched a final scoreless inning. He walked 1 and struck out 1. Jacoby Ellsbury went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI. Cory Keylor went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. Iggy Suarez went 1 for 3 with 2 runs scored.
Lancaster lost 5-2 to Rancho Cucamonga. Mario Pena (0-1) went 3 2/3 innings taking the loss. He gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 BB. Tim Cox threw 3 1/3 innings. He gave up 1 run on 2 hits and 2 BB. Jason Blackey pitched a perfect inning. Bubba Bell went 2 for 4 with a home run. Sal Paniagua went 2 for 4. Aaron Bates went 1 for 3 with a home run. Zach Daeges went 2 for 5.
