Cup of Coffee: 6-3 is a popular score; Campbell stays hot

8/22 Cup of Coffee:
It was the final Complex Monday of the year, as the Florida Complex League and Dominican Summer League end on Tuesday. There were five games on the docket, as the FCL squad was making up last week's rainout against the Braves, while DSL Red was completing a suspended game against a Pirates team. However, only three of the five were completed as scheduled and in an interesting coincidence, each finished 6-3, with just DSL Red Sox Red coming out on top. Starlyn Nunez led the organization with three hits, while Kristian Campbell (pictured) kept on hitting and Deybi Salcedo added four shutout innings in relief, but errors abound for the two losing squads, as they had four each.

The game was tied 1-1 after three innings, but the Red Sox scored just one in the fourth and fifth, while their opponents grabbed five on the back of four Red Sox errors and came away with the victory. This, combined with the cancellation of the second portion of the twin bill, has eliminated the Red Sox from playoff contention.

Kristian Campbell had a pair of knocks, including a triple, to push his OPS over 1.000 on the season since being selected in the 2023 MLB Draft. Only three of the Braves' runs were earned, two of which were charged to Luis Cohen, who gave up four overall. Three of the four hits allowed were on his watch, while he walked two and struck out three over four innings. The other pair of runs came on Cesar Ruiz, one of which was earned.

FCL Red Sox vs. FCL Braves (Canceled, rain)
The make-up of August 17's rainout was canceled due to weather. As the season ends on Tuesday, it will not be made up.

The only squad that got through all of its scheduled games also ended up on the short end of a 6-3 scoreline, also committing a quartet of errors. The Cubs scored the game's first five runs over their first three at-bats and while the Red Sox got to within two in the bottom of the seventh, the road team added an insurance run in the ninth.

Starlyn Nunez was 3 for 5 with a trio of doubles and an RBI, while Raimundo De Los Santos also had a pair of knocks. Most of the damage was done off of starter Yeferson Vargas, who surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four.  Alisson Del Orbe threw two innings of one-hit, shutout ball in relief, striking out three.

The lone winner on the day, Red came back from 3-0 down, as the Pirates got a trio in the top of the third, but the home side responded with two in the bottom half and four more in the fourth, aided by six walks and two errors. The offense was evenly spread out, as eight of the nine starters had a hit, but no one had multiple knocks. Jancel Santana added a double. Deybi Salcedo contributed four innings in relief and was the star, not surrendering a run and permitting just a walk to reach. He also struck out four.

DSL Red Sox Red vs. DSL Pirates Black (Suspended, rain)
The regularly scheduled contest, which was to be seven innings, was cut short in the bottom of the first because of rain. The Pirates had a runner on first with nobody out.

Player of the Day: The penultimate day of the Dominican Summer League was good to Starlyn Nunez, who was the only member of the organization to have multiple extra-base hits, adding a trio of two-baggers in a losing effort for DSL Red Sox Blue. Nunez has used his above-average speed to his advantage in his professional debut, as he has slashed .325/.391/.479 in 215 plate appearances after being signed for $52,500 out of San Pedro de Macoris in January 2023.
