Red Sox select Roman Anthony with second-round compensation pick

With the 79th overall pick in the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Roman Anthony, an outfielder out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Anthony is ranked 72nd in the draft class by Baseball America, and 56th by MLB.com.

Anthony stands six-foot-three, 190 pounds, bats from the left side, and throws right-handed. He gained a measure of notoriety in high school for his tape-measure home runs, with a particularly strong showing at the National High School Invitational where he led all position players with seven hits. Anthony sports a strong, athletic frame that may continue to add strength. Baseball America rated his power potential as "easily" plus.

Playing in one of the nation's strongest high school conferences, Anthony hit .545/.622/.960 this spring, blasting 10 home runs and 10 doubles in 101 at-bats. He played center field in high school but seems very likely to land at a corner spot. He projects to be a solid defender at the corner, with good athleticism and an average arm.

The Red Sox had some success with another Stoneman Douglas High School selection when they took Anthony Rizzo in the sixth round back in 2007. Anthony has a commitment to Ole Miss. The slot value for pick 79 is $820,000.
