Red Sox select Dalton Rogers with third-round pick

With the 99th overall pick in the 2022 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Red Sox selected Dalton Rogers, a left-handed pitcher out of the University of Southern Mississippi. Rogers is ranked 361st in the draft class by Baseball America and is unranked by MLB Pipeline

Listed at 5-foot-11 and 172 pounds, Rogers posted a 1.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 57 strikeouts to 23 walks over 23 relief appearances for the Golden Eagles this season. The Flowood, Miss. native also made two starts for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League earlier this summer, striking out eight of the 24 batters he faced.

Baseball America identifies Rogers as a southpaw who works with a 92-93 mph fastball that can reach 96 mph and is complemented by a low-80s changeup as well as an infrequently-used low-80s slider. The 21-year-old throws from a lower release point.

Rogers becomes the first pitcher the Red Sox have taken in this year's draft after the club used its first three picks on high school position players. The slot value for the 99th overall pick is $617,200.
